Older, Wiser, Happier!

(Who wants to be an outrageous older lady dressed in pink, and on tippy toes, ready to keep adventuring, exploring, laughing, learning, and loving? I do! Do you?)

Getting older has advantages. (Notice, I did not say getting "old.")

Getting older is distinctly different from getting old, at least to my way of thinking.

The other day in a restaurant, while having a delicious scallop lunch with two teenagers, one of them asked my age and I explained it's not something I share.

"Some older people I know act very young and some young ones act like old fogies," I explained. "Therefore, one's age is immaterial. It's one's mindset that really matters."

So here's my partial list of the advantages of getting older:

1. No longer being so conscious of making a good impression. If someone likes me for who I am, great. If not, oh wellllllllll. It's their loss, not mine.

2. Reduced fares at movie theaters.

3. Have deep appreciation for both the big and little things in life.

4. Have learned to be more flexible.

5. Learned, through trial and error, that it's better to forgive than hold a grudge.

6. No longer hold on to resentments. As a matter of fact, let go of them faster than you would a hot potato.

7.Have learned the importance of being good to one's self. For instance, if feeling bummed, do one (or all) of the following as quickly as possible:

a) pedicure
b) full body massage
c) have hair cut, tinted, washed, and styled
d) go thrift store shopping
e) go out to dinner and a movie

8. Enjoy having friends of all ages and learn from each.

9. Know what makes me happy and pursue it.

10. Know, without a doubt, that good health is the greatest gift one can get.
Treasure it. It's worth more than $100 million.

11. Have learned the importance of quiet time, the joy of sitting by a fireplace in winter, the happiness of reading and pursuing hobbies

12. Cherish children who have grown up into good adults who contribute positively to the world and appreciate my spouse with all my heart.

13. Know, by this time in life, that God is the same today as He was yesterday and as He'll be tomorrow. So, if I have a problem I cannot solve, He can and will, if I ask.

So there you have it--a baker's dozen of advantages of getting older!

Bring on the birthday candles! Call for the drum roll. Strike up the band. Yah hoo! Life is g-o-o-d!

CAN YOU ADD A FEW MORE ADVANTAGES OF GETTING OLDER?

Susan I could not agree more with all your thoughts on aging! I think knowing yourself is so important and being happy with who I am. Great post!

Number 1 is my favorite.

Since I don't think age matters, I always share my age if someone asks. Besides - who doesn't like to hear, "no way" when you tell someone how old you are? heh

I'm only 35, but with each passing year, I can see all of those positive changes you've mentioned here taking root!

I no longer worry about what others think, trying to impress....it's more like, 'What you see is what you get'....lol

really enjoyed your post!
ciao bella

Hi Susan: What a fun post. Another advantage of getting older is forgetting how old you are! Happens to me all the time. Blessings, Martha
