Folks keep them in their yards and let them roam. I don't know if they think that's free ranging but eating garbage can't be a good thing especially if they plan to eat the chicken at any point. Who knows, perhaps they keep them for the eggs. I just read an article about chickens -- they normally only lay between 10-15 eggs per year in the wild. By domesticating them for food purposes, man has forced hens to lay hundreds in a year. Chickens as pets or on small farms might lead a pretty good life, but for the rest, it's pretty sad.
