Today's Simple Pleasure is reading the daily newspaper.
Every morning, without fail, either my husband or I trudge outside to retrieve a bright orange plastic bag that holds the morning paper. If we are lucky, the paper delivery person throws it up on the front porch and all we have to do is open the door, bend down, and pick it up.
We must have a new carrier, however, because the last few days the paper has been either on the sidewalk in front of the house or, perish the thought, in a snowbank that was once a front yard. Getting it out from there takes a lot more effort.
Personally, the morning paper is a true simple pleasure, along with my cup of coffee. We read what's going on in the community as well as in the world. Admittedly, I look at the obituaries to see who is no longer in this world and always hope it's no one I know. Love reading letters to the Editor, editorials, and all the feature stories. Never read the sports section (sorry sports fans) and rarely read the cartoons.
I read the Dear Abby Column and then scan the classifieds with a fine tooth comb. Often I circle items I would buy if there were a big wad of cash in my purse. Unfortunately, there isn't but it's still fun to look at the ads.
When people say newspapers are soon to be obsolete, I just shake my head in dismay. As long as they are published, we will be subscribers and I won't waste my phosphorous contemplating newspapers going out of business.
So that's my simple pleasure today: the daily newspaper.

I hardly ever read the news paper, but one my favorite memories is the love my grandparents had for the newspaper. I can also remember the puppy love I had for a few of the paperboys.
I don't get the daily newspaper...only on the weekends do I have any time to read it.
There's nothing like holding the newspaper or the pages of a new book or magazine in your hands and reading at your leisure. So relaxing.
Ah, the joys of newsprint! And think, kids today will never know a ink smudge, the rattle of pages, the smell of damp or yellowing newspapers...
My husband will love to hear this, he works for a newspaper and keeps wondering if it will finally close down. Enjoy your simple pleasure.
I stopped reading the newspaper years ago. Sadly, I don't even get it now in order to get the little league articles that are published even though Zack is likely in some of them. :/ As for the blooms, I do the same exact thing -- and still have baby's breath here and there as it naturally dried and never dies. :) Have a terrific Thursday. Tammy
My hubby is the newspaper reader in our house.
I use it for wrapping rubbish or recycling :-)
I can't imagine a world without printed newspapers!

Hi Susan, You make reading the daily news sound like such an enjoyable time. Your descriptions are wonderful and as always put us right there beside you reading along.
*hugs*

I rarely read the paper anymore...just the local one to find out what's going on in the community. But you do make reading the paper sound soooo good.
I love the newspaper - I am a little worried how long it will stay with this generation of electronics though. I like to read something I can hold onto. Saying this though - I have to be honest and say we just get the weekend paper. Glad to hear how you enjoy it and get so much out of it.

Hi Susan! Wonderful post as always. It's funny, too...because some of the stories in my memoir include newspapers! Please e-mail me because I've sent you a couple of e-mails and haven't heard back. I need to know if you're not getting them or just haven't had time to reply! Thanks!
Lucas, my dog, brings the paper in when we open the door. How cute is that? He picked that on his own, and has been his daily "chore". He brings it to my mom :o)
But I don't read the news! It's always something bad! I read the cultural section, and the sports section (oddly enough!), which often times also bring bad news!...is there be a good news print?! there should!
have a lovely day!
Hi Susan -
I only get the newspaper on Sunday for the coupons and classified job ads. Perhaps your newspaper is different, but I find ours is mostly fluff with little in the way of insightful hard news.
My daily pleasure is writing in my journal and reading my Bible before I start the day. Then I'm ready to face whatever life throws at me.
Blessings,
Susan :)
I enjoy the daily paper. Even when I don't seem to have the time to sit down and read it cover to cover, I like to skim and make sure I stay up on what's happening...whether nearby or across the world. This is one I definitely relate to!
And one that dh and I enjoy first thing in the morning too Susan. And as long as they print them we will subscribe too. Thanks for sharing this wonderful simple pleasure.
Thank you for coming by and for taking the time to leave me a sweet note.

Hi Sue,
We get the weekend papers delivered, and our delivery person sometimes gets the paper under the car (which is a little difficult for me to retrieve). After reading about your snowbanks,I'll think of you and stop whinging." at least it's not in the snowbank" will be my new mantra.
God Bless

I feel the same way about books. I don't care if we can have them all on e-readers...I love my books, the look and feel of them. Sitting with a cup of tea and reading is one of my all time favorite pleasures.
Hugs,
Terri
I used to love reading the daily newspaper. When my husband lost his job and we were cutting back expenses, we stopped the paper. I too read the obits and finished with my favorite part of the paper... the cryptoquote. I just love doing them!
Hi Susan..
I love the smell of a cold, fresh newspaper in the morning along with my coffee.
Don't read sports either!
But I hate the black finger prints all over my white walls and doors in the house!
That I could do without!
Ciao Bella!

I love my morning paper too. It keeps getting thinner and thinner, but like you I'll continue to get it until it's no more.
I love reading a big fat Sunday paper! But I read most of my news on-line!
Yep. That's my morning routine as well. There's nothing like coffee and a newspaper to start the day.
Hi Susan! I guess it isn't so strange to have a Christmas cactus blooming now! I bought that planter years ago at T.J. Maxx and I probably should transplant the cactus into a bigger pot
so it will grow bigger, but I like it in that pot, too! Where did our warm weather go? It's been freezing the past couple of days! I'm ready for some true spring weather!... Donna
Our local paper has gone down hill. In fact I think its rather trashy, but because it is the only local paper available I still read it everyday. Sports page first!! lol
Great simple pleasure, Susan. Reading a daily paper used to be one of my favorite times of the day--especially if I had an article in the day's edition (wink, wink). I truly miss my daily paper. We stopped subscribing because, even though our daily is one of the largest papers in the country, it seems they have so few local stories, but depend on news services for their news. I miss the good ole days.
When I was working I would read at least one newspaper a day, after the news I'd enjoy the puzzles page. I'm afraid technology rules in our house and I hardly ever read a newspaper now.
