Recently, I went to pick up a niece at Albany New York's International Airport. In the waiting area, I happened to glance up a flight of stairs and was totally taken in by a piece of art.
It contained hundreds upon hundreds of folded pieces of fabric in every possible color imaginable. The stacked pieces ran all the way up the wall to the very ceiling of the airport.
The art work was absolutely stunning in design as well as size. Despite my fear of heights, I climbed the stairwell leading to the piece to snap photos for this blog. No way would I want you to miss out on seeing this.
The work is part of Albany International Airport's Art and Culture Program which was established in 1998. Funding for the program is included in the airport's operating budget. The works of many artists are displayed. What a refreshing treat it is to pass the time in an aiport by viewing art!
The program, according to an airport website, has sought "to stimulate enjoyment of the arts." The airport is actually a national model of public art programs.
However, the only information about the fabric exhibit available was on a small plaque at the bottom of the stairs. It noted the work on stacked fabric art was by Susie Brandt and dated 2009.
It would have been nice to see a photo of the artist and have a little more information about her. In addition, it would be interesting to know how much material was used in the piece and how long it took her to construct it! See? My inquisitive mind never stops asking questions.
HAVE YOU SEEN ART IN AIRPORTS?

Lucky for us you keep a camera with you at all times.
I love the artwork, it looks a bit like my workplace ;)
Hugs,
Angela.
I love this ~ beautiful colors and textures against the stark white. Interesting :)
very interesting art work. I like this idea. Our airport is bland and functional.
I have never seen this - but it is amazing - looks unique and amazing - hope some nasty person doesn't pull one out of the bottom! Do I have a mean mind or what?
Very cool and interesting! Is it just fabric stacked or is it somehow held together so that someone can't actually grab a piece and run?
At the train station in Spain, there is a very huge doll head -- at least that's what it looks like; the kids and I found it quite strange and a bit spooky.
I like when airports have painted benches or other artwork to view; especially when you have to walk, and walk, and walk.
Have a great day! Tammy
PS Although I don't fast during Ramadan, the kids and hubby do, so I cut back during the day so that I can eat with them at nite. I don't normally do heavy meals in the evening, so try to keep it simple. Tonite, lentil soup, cheese sambousa and salad. :)
Love the colors! We have mosaics in our airport and of course a big ole Grizzly Bear and lots of real stuffed animals. Folks coming to Montana expect to see them....LOL Kit
Incredible and fun too! :O)
Now that is a piece of art which touches the heart of a fabric lover like me! It would be very hard not to touch it!
Wow! Now that is something. And what a treat to see. I do love when I am taken by surprise in the most unexpected places!
We have a sculpture of John Wayne in front of our airport in Orange County. This piece at Albany is quite unique I must say.
What an amazing piece of art work. You did a fantastic job of photographing it.
