Calling all bird lovers.
Here is a perplexing situation that I hope you can help me with.
In our backyard, there are numerous bird houses on the fence as well as two feeders, filled with the best quality seeds available.
In the birdbath, there is a device that keeps the water ice-free all winter long.
It should be a bird haven but guess what?
This winter no birds can be found.
Last year, flocks of them came to feast and drink in our backyard.
In the summer of last year, a neighborhood cat came around quite a bit.
I'm wondering if his presence scared the little birdies away for good.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS HOW THE BIRDS CAN BE ATTRACTED, ONCE AGAIN, TO THE YARD? (It just seems like they are chirping 'Thanks but no thanks.')

Maybe they got shocked at the metal watering hole with electric running to it? maybe they got smart and flew south? That is perplexing.

I think it depends on the food sources available to them. They might be getting enough on fields and streams due to a lighter winter so far. Don't give up. When they are hungry they will be back and then you might notice them in a big flock when they do.

Was there a change in your neighborhood, with trees or evergreen bushes cut down? The birds must have large trees and preferably evergreen bushes and trees to shelter in at night and in storms. That is my two cents worth :) P.S. In cold areas it is always a blessing to the birds to plant evergreen bushes.
So sorry to hear that the birds are not coming to the buffet you have for them! I've no idea why not.
I live in a completely different climate so can't help you out. I have birds in my yard year round and I do not have a feeder or a bird bath. I think they just like it here.

Oh, that's too bad. No more birds coming around in your back yard. Well, I have to say that I don't use any bird feeders or bird houses. Sometimes I will see them in my back yard just sitting on the fence, but I think it's such a glorious sight when they come around on their own. So, I just let nature be, and when they do come around, it's that much nicer.
The snow in your yard looks like a winter wonderland, Susan. It's sooooo pretty.

I think it could be the lack of snow cover and the late freeing of the natural bodies of water. It's very easy for the birds to find things to eat and water to drink this winter so far. Going into someone's yard is a last ditch effort to find food. I think they feel safer finding their food in groves and grassy areas of parks, etc.
Just a hunch.....
