Predictions of Weather Can Be Pretty "Flaky"

(Here are some pieces of cranberry glass, silhouetted against the snowy yard.)

Every time I hear the weatherman (woman? person?) predicting a snow storm, my skepticism blows in as furious as a nor'easter.

So many times predictions of big storms  fill the newspapers and television screen and then the storm fizzles to pathetic proportions. Once, I even remember schools being closed in anticipation of a storm that took a different route at the last minute and completely bypassed this area. That was a hoot and I couldn't help laughing my head off.

The weather forecasters predicted a huge storm for this weekend with heavy accumulation of what they described as "light" snow. So, Friday afternoon, when I got home, I made sure the large brass box in the living room was filled to the brim with logs from the side porch. My husband, bless his heart, had the fireplace ready to go so I just had to  open the flew, light up the newspapers at the bottom, and start the fire.

(Stained glass pieces are among favorite art objects around here. )

There's something terribly soothing about a fire crackling in one's living room as snow falls in a profusion of millions of flakes from the sky.  Because we've been trying to save money on the oil bill, temps in this old house have been kept at a frosty 60 degrees during the day. Consequently, I put on my warmest polyester pink nubby sweater and fleece slacks and socks. Even before the fire was lit, the living room  felt pretty toasty.

Of course, as soon as the fire was lit, the snow outside stopped falling. Incredulously, I stared out the window and saw nary a single white flake coming down from the sky.

I kept the fire going for at least seven hours before going to bed.

Since then, we've had  a light dusting of snow, the kind that makes everything extra pretty, like white frosting on a cake.

As for the big whammy of a snowstorm, maybe it passed us by or perhaps it's on its way. After all, it is winter in New England.
DO YOU BELIEVE WEATHER PREDICTIONS?

  1. Hmmm I'll answer that later tomorrow after we see if this snow and ice storm hits here as predicted.

  2. Two to four inches headed our way, which means it could be none or more than the sum. They are never right! There's an ice storm headed to my friends in the south east. I hope none of it materializes. Winter, bah-humbug!

  3. I didn't until this year. When it snowed on Christmas Day - many inches - here in GA - I gave them a new respect. We are expecting more tonight. sandie

  4. Your photos are lovely. As far as weather predictions-I think of them as weather guessers, although they were right about the tornado that touched down in Missouri last week.

I lived in Western Massachusettes for almost five years, and loved the bright autumn colors.

  6. I never trust the predictions on this side of the world. I will tell you that there was a time when I cleaned my balconies, and without fail, a sandstorm would show up to make it all for nought. I stopped cleaning my balconies, and we had hardly any dust storms at all. :) Today we have had drizzle. They say maybe dust tomorrow. Just never know. Stay warm over there. Sure looks cold outside your window. But beautiful! Time for me to hit the hay. Best wishes, Tammy PS The lentil soup is just 1-1/2 cups of orange lentils in 12 cups of water with a few potatoes and onions and carrots cut up in it. I use vege extract to flavor it, then add cumin, black pepper and lemon to finish it off. Delish and easy. Cook until the desired consistency. If you cook it too long, will become like mashed potatoes. :/

  7. Your pictures are beautiful. We hardly get much snow here. Winter is so much prettier and peaceful looking blanketed in snow. The weather folks here are about 50/50 with the weather. They usually predict a chance of anything, just in case.

  8. Love your pictures! I am skeptical about weather predictions. I know it's not an exact science with many variables, but it would be nice for them to be a little more accurate. Oh well.
Have a great week and stay warm!
    Blessings,

  10. You should live where I do..it really never snows but rain storms get huge coverage on the news for rock slides, potholes, closed roads etc. It did snow for the first time in over 17 years where my son lives and it sure looked pretty. Grandsons had a ball in it. I always check the weather!

  11. LOL! Had to laugh at this one, Susan! We've had a very easy winter so far, with the snows hugging the lakeshore and leaving just a couple inches inland. Thank goodness! The meteorologists are usually at least close, I think....lol!

  12. I think the weather people have been a little off lately. Maybe their equipment needs some fine tuning. Have a wonderful week!!

  13. That cranberry glass is beautiful against the snow background! 60 degrees would be quite a challenge for me ('course we don't have a fire to keep close to, either...). We didn't have quite the amount of snow that you did, but our view was similarly beautiful yesterday. Stay warm - ANY way you can!

  14. Weather is so unpredictable these days, I am sure it has experts running around like crazy beings :o) Beautiful winter stamps Susan! it is sunny and warm in Guatemala :o) but they say a cold front from the north will enter the country today, bringing cold, grey skies and wind. Hope it is not as drastic as they have anticipated!
    have a great day!
