Joining Dayle's Simple Pleasures party from A Collection of This and That. Every week participants tell about something small or insignificant that add to the joy of their lives.
Today's Simple Pleasure, for me, is tablecloths.
I like putting a clean, ironed cloth on our kitchen table. Call me an old-fashioned girl or just plain crazy, but I even like ironing the ones that require it. Sometimes I'll spray a little starch on the cloths while ironing them, too.
One of my sisters gave me the cloth shown in the photos today. It was still wrapped in the cellophane package. I washed it, of course, and ironed and starched it before putting it on the table. Admittedly, it was a little hard to get all the wrinkles out, even with a steam iron. It reminds me, appropriately, of spring.
To me, using a tablecloth makes each meal just a little bit more special than slapping dishes down onto the bare wood.
As soon as one tablecloth gets dirty, off it comes and gets tossed into the wash. Then, I'll grab another one from a cabinet in the dining room. Needless to say, I have a lot of tablecloths in all colors and patterns. Many were thrifted.
So a freshly washed and ironed tablecloth that makes the kitchen table look nice, for me, anyway, is worth being called a simple pleasure.
DO YOU STILL USE TABLECLOTHS?
I use placemats more then tablecloths but I do love them! Not ironing them though! I do love vintage tablecloths. hugs, Linda
ReplyDeleteI love tablecloths! You can change the whole room with a new cloth! Your floral patterns are so cheery:-) I also love to iron them, the smell of hot cotton and starch, very relaxing:-))

Hi Susan, lovely tablecloth. I think I need to get some spray starch. Although I don't like ironing, that smell of starch and steam might make it more worthwhile. :) My tablecloths are from India. And I have two from WalMart that are vinyl for messy meals. Have a terrific day. Tammy
ReplyDeleteYes Susan, I still use tablecloths!
ReplyDeleteLove them - especially vintage or lace cloths.
They transform the atmosphere so easily from casual to formal with their accompanying decorations :-)

I love tablecloths too, but rarely use cloth ones on kitchen anymore. Always cloths one on the dining table though, but flannel backed with many placemats in the kitchen where table is used constantly. I have some 1950's vintage ones I bring out occasionaly for the kitchen which have a real homey, "feels good" mood about them...

Susan,
ReplyDeleteI tend to use tablecloths more in the fall and winter months especially Thanksgiving-Christmas time. In the warm months I like to use place mats. Your tablecloth today is very Spring-like and cheerful.

ReplyDeleteI love to use my vintage tablecloths! And shhhhh...don't tell anyone, but I enjoy ironing them too.
ReplyDeleteI love vintage tablecloths, and use them a lot on the patio table, but I do enjoy the freshness a tablecloth gives to a kitchen table. And I iron mine, too. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and for the sweet comment!!
ReplyDeleteYes! I still use tablecloths & like you I don't mind the ironing at all. Ah, nothing like a fresh clean tablecloth and a sweet one like yours would put a smile on my face :)
I use placemats but love the idea that someone out there still loves and uses tableclothes! I imagine that you have a wonderful stash to chose from!
ReplyDeleteOkay I'm going to be honest - no I don't. I really didn't even think about using one - where is my mind at? Although I would be putting it in the laundry every meal! I'd have to get a dozen - maybe I will at the thrift store next week.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do, and I love them. I'm so crazy fond of the vintage ones that have been passed down for years in my family. Yours is right up my alley.
