Near a beach house on the ocean in Old Lyme, Connecticut, there is also a pond where a family of swans lives.
Sometimes they hide from humans and are no where to be found. No matter how much we try to find them, they remain elusive. The only thing we can see are the deep pink beach roses peeking out from green bushes, low to the ground.
White seagulls fly gracefully above in the sky, making mournful screeching sounds. They move their wings back and fourth and seem to dart in and out of the fluffy white clouds.
Then, faster than one can blink an eye, the swans return. Looking out of the screened windows of the beach house porch, we can see the swan family glide slowly across the pond, past the seaweeds, and straw-like grass.
Some days, the swan family remains close to the house. Other days, the family ventures out to an island in the middle of the water behind the house.
The female primps herself, often stretching her long neck and tucks it almost under her wing. The male looks her way and glides toward her.
Even from a distance, one can see his long, perfectly smooth neck. Like all swans, he exudes grace.
In the morning, very early, as humans begin to open their sleepy eyes, the swan family is already gliding across the pond. A little one remains on land, ignoring the rest of his family who move slowly across the water.
The sight is a splendorous way to start the day. As the rest of the world awakens, the swans, once again, disappear from sight.
In the evening, as nighttime falls, the sky turns into melted gold, apricot, and pink. All mixed together, the palette is more beautiful than a painting.
I think they are beautiful. I don't recall seeing one up close. There is one beautiful picture I see on the internet of a swan. Looks like you had a beautiful view from your cabin. Very nice and I bet the sounds were so peaceful.
ReplyDeleteHappy 4th Susan.
This was just the loveliest post today! Thank you! I feel peaceful and serene just looking at the photos of the swans. I have not seen them close up but have always thought they were beautiful. Thank you for sharing this today. hugs, Linda
ReplyDeleteOh, my. I am in heaven. Whata exquisite photos. I so love swans, their grace & beauty. When we were in Holland I saw a similar (to your) setting with a set of black swans & family. I could have stayed forever just watching their grace & beauty.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, hubby & I are both going back over the pictures. You made our day.
May her flag fly high & proud forever over this great land ... may God see the changes we need & grant us that blessing.
Happy 4th, my friend,
TTFN ~

I have seen a few swans, but not many. Lovely! Hope you are having a nice weekend...it is so hot here and Japanese bettles are trying to ruin my flowers!
ReplyDeleteWe had swan on Bankson Lake (MI) where my husband directed a camp. We also had Canada geese. The swan & geese did NOT get along. Swan (and geese) can be very mean!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos! I have seen swans at a nearby pond. They are lovely!
ReplyDeleteMy friend lived in Old Lyme, CN and I visited in 1980's and loved it there.
ReplyDeleteI've seen loads of swans..even black ones in Europe...and I always admire their very sleek necks and the way they glide along the water. Your pictures are lovely.
ReplyDeleteYes I have seen swans close up and I do think they are beautiful. Great photos.
ReplyDeleteThey are so lovely . I have not seen a swan in many years. I showed your pictures to Dax. The Ugly Duckling is his favorite story.
