Beauty Surrounds the Farm Where American Poet Lived

It's no wonder the American poet, Edna St. Vincent Millay, (1892 - 1950), wrote  poetry and sonnets that touched the human heart.

Steepletop,  the farm where she lived from 1925 until her death in 1950, is a place of vast beauty, peace, and serenity.

Even today, the farm  in Austerlitz, NewYork, has breathtaking vistas and trees whose ages one can only estimate.

These days, only doors of former fences remain but one can imagine what the place must have been like in its prime. Stone walls; wrought iron gate handles; brave, orange day lilies looking up to the sun; and all kinds of walkways into the woods can all be found at Steepletop.

Well, enough writing. I hope you enjoy the nature photo tour prepared for you.

The Edna St. Vincent Millay Society, 436 East Hill Road, in Austerlitz, N.Y., 12017, is in the process of restoring Steepletop, both house and gardens, to exactly how they were when the poet lived there.

At least $3 million is needed to complete the project, according to Peter Bergman, executive director of the Edna St. Vincent Millay Society.   It will take many years to finish all the work.

For more information, or to donate to the restoration, check out the Steepletop website.

HAVE YOU EVER VISITED A WRITER'S OR POET'S  HOME? WHO AND WHERE?

  1. It is a beautiful area and restoring the grounds to their original condition is certainly a worthwhile cause. America should take great care to preserve its past.

I've been to the Finger Lakes region of Upstate NY with friends a couple of times and love the area a lot! Have a great day! Tammy

  2. It is always good to know that someone is taking care of beautiful places like Edna St. Vincent Millay's home. I love the doors! Your photos are great.
I visited Hemingway's home in Key West and loved it! It has also been preserved very nicely - the descendents of his six-toed cats are still in residence!
