Chickens are curious creatures.
When I was a child, my paternal grandmother kept chickens.
They scared the wits out of me because they always came nipping at my ankles.
My daughter would love to raise chickens in the countryside.
That is one dream I hope comes true because fresh eggs are the best.
There's no comparing fresh eggs to those bought in the super.
Fresh ones are a deep, almost orange color, not sickly pale yellow.
Fresh ones taste better, too.
Check out this "fluffy" chicken below.
To tell you the truth, I never saw one like it in my life until I spotted this one!
All the photos of chickens on this post were taken at a 4-H County Youth Fair in Western Massachusetts this month.
DO YOU HAVE ANY CHICKEN STORIES?
I've seen some expensive fluffy feathered chickens around here. Folks keep them in their yards and let them roam. I don't know if they think that's free ranging but eating garbage can't be a good thing especially if they plan to eat the chicken at any point. Who knows, perhaps they keep them for the eggs. I just read an article about chickens -- they normally only lay between 10-15 eggs per year in the wild. By domesticating them for food purposes, man has forced hens to lay hundreds in a year. Chickens as pets or on small farms might lead a pretty good life, but for the rest, it's pretty sad. Best wishes, Tammy

ReplyDeleteMerle.........
Your chickens are so pretty! My great-grandma had chickens and they were the fluffy kind. She always made me a fired egg for breakfast when I visited her - mmm... so good! You are right, fresh eggs are WAY better than store-bought. Two of my neighbors have chickens so we always get fresh from them.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your evening!
A daughter and son-in-law have a chicken named Cupcake who is really tame and loves to be picked up and petted! She murmurs this sound that I call a "cat purr.":)
