Every time my toddler granddaughter and I ate avocados, it felt wasteful to throw away the pits.
After all, they held such potential for continued life!
So on one of her visits, a big flower pot and potting soil stood ready on the kitchen counter.
"Let's plant an avocado pit and see what happens," I told her. She was totally enthusiastic and tapped the soil down over the bald pit.
"Will it grow, Gammie?" the little voice asked.
"I sure hope so," I answered.
Weeks went by.
We watered and watched the dark soil.
Nothing happened.
Explaining patience to a toddler is nearly impossible because she wants everything "now."
Admittedly, there were moments when I thought the planting experience went bust but we hung on and hoped the Lord would let an avocado plant grow.
One day it happened. A tiny green shoot reared its pointy head up above the black soil.
Yippah!
Today, the avocado plant is tall and quite lovely-----proof that the Creator tends to even His smallest "creatures."
Sometimes we have to wait in cold darkness, exercising patience, but the sun, eventually, shines through, brilliantly bright and life is renewed, bigger and even better than before!
PIT
God is so good!
HAVE YOU EVER PLANTED AN AVOCADO PIT?
You can't see what has been growing steadily all along until the breakthrough. :-)
ReplyDeleteSusan,
ReplyDeleteSuch a special project for you and your sweet granddaughter, and look at your green thumb!
Your Avocado plant is thriving. Years ago, when my husband and I were stationed at schofield barracks in Hawaii I did just as you have done here, then because of the heavenly weather I planted it outside. Amazingly enough it grew to 10 feet tall and produced avocados !
I'm sure this sounds like a tall tale! Buts it's a true story!

I think we did in school as a project or one of my children.
ReplyDeleteI hope you get some avocados!
This is great and growing strong. Want to see how it continues. However...if I eat avocado, within half hour or less I am violently ill. This is only two slices so I think a half avocado might bury me!
ReplyDeleteLovely post! I'm linking to it the first Friday in February. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely post, perfect for Guideposts or The Upper Room. one year we planted marigold seeds, and the children were so impatient, I bought a plant and inserted it into the pot. Made everyone really joyful :)
ReplyDeleteNever have any of my avacado plants that I grew from the pit survived..never...you must have a green thumb.
ReplyDelete..Hi Susan..... I love your avocado tree....My kids and I did this a few times over 30 years ago... we had a few successes that made lovely pot plants..... I also had a friend who did this and she planted her tree in the ground and eventually it fruited for her.

How wonderful! I thought you had to set the pits in water first, let them sprout and then plant. I did one like that, but when I put it in soil, it immediately died. Maybe next time I'll just put it in the pot and see what happens. Best wishes, tAmmy
