Believe in Spring

Once, during one of the darkest times of my life, some dear soul sent me a heartfelt card.

On it was a little poem that has stuck with me for many, many decades.

Its message was short and sweet but very meaningful.

It read:

"YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE IN HAPPINESS,
         OR HAPPINESS NEVER COMES.
I KNOW THAT A BIRD CHIRPS NONETHELESS,
WHEN ALL HE FINDS ARE CRUMBS.
YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT THE BUDS WILL
          BLOW,
BELIEVE IN THE GRASS IN THE DAYS OF SNOW.
AH! THAT'S THE REASON A BIRD CAN SING.
ON HIS DARKEST DAY, HE BELIEVE IN SPRING."

During these dark days of winter, it's sometimes hard to even contemplate spring.

Snow keeps falling in countless flakes and weather forecasters keep warning of more storms on the way.

But, like the little bird in the poem, we have to "believe in the grass in the days of snow."

Okay, so from this day forward, I will try to do that.

DO YOU OFTEN THINK OF SPRING THESE DAYS?

  1. Oh to believe in what's to come. WHEN is the real question. My dear friends in Boston are crying "Uncle!"
    Susa, your granddaughter is beautiful.

  2. I try not to think of spring, for we have a lot of winter remaining. Once we hit March, I'll start thinking of spring, actually, of May. That's when spring finally arrives here.

  5. Lovely poem. Our winter has not been hard but some snow is in air for tonight. We were just discussing here how the poor East is suffering. I think I would lose my marbles! You have a good attitude which helps.

  7. Ya'll sure have been slammed lately. We had principals in Boston for recruiting and they got stuck for a couple of days, actually missed one of the fairs and lots of candidates weren't able to make it in. Sending warm wishes and hugs your way,
    Tammy

  8. I do believe in "grass in the days of snow". Great poem.

February is half over now; soon it will be March and old man Winter will have to start thinking about calling it quits. In the meantime I will be grateful for a warm home and a turkey roasting in the oven! It is very, very cold and windy today, but the sun is shining and I'm enjoying watching the "snow ghosts" swirling outside my window. The wind is howling and trees are dancing up a storm or should I say "in the storm". A steaming cup of tea along with a heart shaped Valentine's Day cookie is a treat not to be savored on a hot summer's day. Never to experience this? I would miss it. It also makes the Spring that much sweeter!
