Checking for information on the internet, even its place of origin gives a mixed review.
Some sources say it's native to India and eastern Asia.
Others claim Rose of Sharon originated in China and Korea.
Wherever its origin, it's a truly gorgeous shrub.
Its stunning flowers come in several colors including pink, purple red, violet, and white.
The Rose of Sharon shrubs in my daughter and son-in-law's yard are pink and violet.
They really are quite exquisite.
There is no detectacle fragrance coming from the flowers.
Rose of Sharon is a very hardy plant that needs little tending.
It survives and blooms throughout hot, humid summers and maintains its own throughout long, freezing cold winters.
Another official name for it is "hibiscus syriacus."
The flowers of Rose of Sharon bloom during the day but close in the evening.
So that's the lowdown on the rose that isn't a rose!

They are pretty.
I have never heard of a rose of Sharon. I used to have two hibiscus trees on my side yard but they had to be cut down as the roots were causing plumbing problems. I miss them terribly. The rose that isn't a rose is very pretty. Good information in the blog too Susan.
I've heard of this flower, Rose of Sharon, before. It doesn't quite look like the rose, but it sounds sturdy and can survive harsh weather like the rose. The shrub in your daughter's yard is so pretty, and I like the pink color. Reminds me of You!
Have a good August week, Susan.

The rose of Sharon truly is a beautiful flowering tree/shrub. I don't think I've ever seen a pink colored one but it sure is pretty. When I opened your post and saw the pink blooms, I immediately thought about happy you must be to see this gorgeous color... hope your day has been full of pretty pinks..
