Post for Thursday, June 10, 2010: Flowers Lift the Spirit and Are Food for the Soul

Everyone needs food for the body but we also need food for the soul.  For me, the best soul smorgasbord in the world comes in the form of flowers!

That's one of the reasons spring is such a spectacular and special season.  Flowers in bloom lift up the soul.  Whenever I see a new bloom in our yard, it fills my heart and soul with pure and utter joy.

When I heard my husband's voice the other morning, calling me from outside, I could tell it was something wonderful that he wanted to show me.  Come to find out, a rose bush he had carefully tended had burst into multiple blooms of scarlet roses so delicate and gorgeous they felt like special blessings.

The impatiens are proliferating and the verbana and red geraniums are shouting for attention, too. They all look so stunning and rich with color. The rhododendrum burst into bloom almost overnight and made quite a show in the yard with their lavender blooms.

The peonies are out, too, and bring memories of my paternal grandmother. She grew them in her side yard. She also kept chickens. Their pecking at my ankles irritated me to no end but the peonies always brought a smile to my face.

Their fragrance is divine.  The one aspect of peonies I dislike is they tend to attract ants and lots of them. Once, as a kid, I took a big whiff of a peony and a couple of ants went way up my nose. I thought I was going to flip out and had to blow hard to get the little fellas out of my nostrils.  Maybe they thought they had found a new hotel in which to reside! Had to chuckle at that memory.

A circular flower garden in our yard that looked pretty bare a couple of weeks ago has started to fill out. Pretty soon it will be overflowing with perky red and white impatiens.

Ahhhhh, spring is such a lovely season, I wish it could last much longer.

ARE FLOWERS ALSO FOOD FOR YOUR SOUL?

Your flowers are gorgeous. I have an ant experience too. When I was little I hid my chocolate cookie on a tree stump so I wouldn't have to share with my brother. I took one bite and got a mouth full of ants that were the same color as my cookie. My grandma had always said I had 'ants in the pants' prior to that incident. I worried forever after.

I have gorgeous smelling jasmine blooming in my front yard and lots of flowers in the back too. Orange blossoms on my orange tree smell delicious too. Your flowers are beautiful Susan.

Yes they are!! beautiful and fragant flowers inspire you and relaxes you, all at the same time. Even when looked from afar. While working, I often come to the window, and the view of nature outside, in the gardens of the building, or in houses close by, lift my spirits.

Impatients, by the way, are called here "chatias" :-)

have a lovely day!!

Your flowers are lovely, thanks for posting your beautiful pics. Our spring has been wet and cool and our flowers are just now starting to bloom. My husband is kind of a rose fanatic and is fretting as he waits for blooms. Love your flowers!

Beautiful! Gorgeous! Lovely! My geraniums died. Just toooooo hot! Trying to keep everything else green and alive is hard. I look so forward to renewal, and real life seasons in the States. We surely don't get it here in these harsh conditions. Best wishes, Tammy
