The Old First Church of Bennington, Vermont

The Old First Church, (First Congregational), the very first Protestant church built in Vermont, stands proudly on a fairly quiet, tree-studded hill in Bennington.

The grand, white building, more than 200 years old,  is quintessential New England.

The original Meeting House was constructed in 1783 and the current white church was built in 1805. It was dedicated in January of 1806.

It's been dubbed "Vermont's Colonial Shrine."

The attractive fence that runs all the way down the sidewalk from the church and borders the nearby cemetery is what originally caught my eye.

No where have I seen a more attractive, gorgeous actually, fence.

According to information on the church's website, "much of the early history of Bennington and of Vermont took place in and around the original Meeting House..."

Hope you enjoy the photos here and, if interested, check out the church's website.

Tomorrow we are going to go inside the cemetery so if that peaks your interest, come on back!

HAVE YOU EVER VISITED VERMONT?

This is gorgeous. I love New England churches. I was actually in Bennington once years ago. I'd love to visit there again.

Hello :)
I like to visit churches, the oldest because they have a unique atmosphere, charm and magic of a bygone era. I have the impression that today's churches are cold and devoid of spirituality. This church has beautiful windows and feel calm around it. Have a nice day.

I have been to Vermont many times, and your pictures capture the essence of it. The old white church is beautiful against the last of the fall foliage and the fence is quite stately. It lends an air of quiet elegance to the scene.

Glad you got to have such a nice day trip with your visitor and that the weather cooperated.

Our one visit to Vermont was very brief - overnight stay in Brattleboro as we had crossed over from New Hampshire, a quick swing as we left Martha's Vineyard about three years ago. I'd love to return!

Peaceful place and particularly that day because there were so few people around. The sun sure made what was left of the foliage sparkle. Left lovely memories!
