Park of Honor for Veterans

There's a park square in the middle of many new England towns.

In one of them in  western Massachusetts, the local Kiwanis Club installs hundreds of American flags in time for Veterans Day in November.

People sponsor each flag with the names of their loved ones who served in the U.S. Armed Services.

The flags remain for several weeks, until it's time for the gigantic Christmas tree.

Then the flags are taken down and given to whoever sponsored one for $30.

All the monies raised go for scholarships to children and grandchildren of veterans.

For the past three years, there has been a flag flying there for my father, Joe, who served in the U.S. Army infantry.

Just about very time I drive by the more than 500 flags, my eyes fill with tears.

When I think of all the sacrifices men and women made for this country, it's rather overwhelming.

May those soldiers who have gone before us, rest in eternal peace.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF WHEN YOU SEE YOUR COUNTRY'S FLAG?

Such a lovely image of the flags in the snow. Sounds like the donations are put to a good cause.

What a great cause. I can barely stand to look at our national cemetery with thousands of gravestones. Sad loss of life. Have a great weekend.

What a beautiful sight. So glad I got to contribute to Dad's flag. Wonderful pictures Susan. Keep up the good work. I have something to hang the flag up that you sent me too. I think of all the people who died giving us freedom when I look at it.
