Terri Tiffany: Guest Blogger and Inspirational Writer

One of the very first writer blogs I read, when discovering blogland, was Terri Tiffany's Inspirational Writer's Blog.

Terri's sincere, easy-to-read style appealed to me greatly.  I felt an immediate bond, as  if I were reading something written by a sister or dear friend.

When Terri agreed to do a guest post for Writing Straight from the Heart, I was absolutely thrilled.

Asked to write a few sentences to introduce herself, she wrote that she  "counseled adults, owned a Christian bookstore, and now resides in Florida where she drives her husband of thirty-two years crazy reading him her stories during Jeopardy. Her work appears in magazines, Sunday school take-home papers, and anthologies such as Chicken Soup for the Soul, Hearts at Home, Cross and Quill, Guide , and Standard. She is working on her fourth novel. "

Many thanks to Terri for joining us today. As one writer to another, it is great to be in the company of a kindred spirit!

Please check out her blog. You will come away inspired.   http://terri-treasures.blogspot.com/

So here is her column which I titled,

Never Give Up: The Value of Perseverance

                                                                By Terri Tiffany

After her recent rejection from a publisher, a fellow-writer emailed me and asked, “Remind me again. Why we do we do this?” A day later, I read an article about a ninety-two-year-old woman in England who was offered her first book deal.

She didn’t give up.

Nor do we. If we believe we have a great story to tell.

In honor of my blog anniversary, I broke down and ordered all four years of my posts. Call it motivation. Call it a great sale. But mostly I wanted to hold it in my hands and read my ups and downs again so I can fully appreciate what I’ve put into learning this craft called writing.

Have I paid enough dues already? Should I have a book published sitting on a Barnes and Nobles shelf? Should my rejections slow down and the agents I’ve queried be calling me with fantastic offers of representation?

Umm.

Am I really the best judge of all that?

I don’t think so but what I can judge are my efforts. Have I uncovered and done every possible thing to help me achieve my writing goals?

This month I’ve signed up for an online writers’ course. This week I formed a Beta group of readers and I’ve asked them to read my book and give me honest opinions. Next month—who knows? But I can guarantee you this: I’ll be doing something and it won’t be called quitting.

I’m not ninety-two years old yet and I don’t want to wait that long for my dream to come true. So I believe in pushing myself however I can now.

What about you? What will you do next in your journey?

Good post! Thanks to both of you for sharing it:)

I am not sure about what my next steps are. There are a few directions I could go, so will pray and take it one step at a time. And move forward - always forward, if even in teeny steps.

Thanks and blessings,
Karen

Hmmm, I wonder who would ask you such a question? You are so wise, my friend. I think your attitude and outlook are an inspiration to all of us who read your blog or have the privilege of knowing you personally. You WILL succeed, and you will be encouraging the rest of us all along the way. That's just who you are. Thank you.

Great guest post. I think that if I do work on new writing for publication, it will be devotionals. Right now, I'm still enjoying the newness of blogging.

Great post. That woman's contract reminded me we're never too old to go after our dreams. And God has his own timetable.

Terri's blog is one of my new favorite finds. This piece about perseverance is one of the reasons why I like her so much as a writer and a woman.

Great, inspiring post. We must keep trying to improve. I tell myself that too when the road to publication seems to thwart me. It's the one thing I truly have power over--my own craft.
Thanks Terri and Susan!

So it's perseverance. I am not a writer. I can cook, bake and because I take lots of photos, I sometimes come up with one that's kinda fun.

Several years ago I made as gifts for a couple of grandchildren one of those picture books you can get from Kodak or Winkflash. I wrote a rhyming poem that related to each child and worked up pictures of the kids to illustrate the poem. I made a couple of others writing short stories. Well, I didn't realize I would have so many grandchildren. At my daughters request (pleading) I have to complete one for Shaela by the end of this month.

When they were visiting from NY a few months ago, I specifically shoot some pics with a vague, little girl theme of a princess/castle etc. I love the photo editing part but the writing part not so much. This time it is a short story but longer that previous ones. I am writing a bit above her 4 years but not so to have her loose interest (as if a little girl could lose interest in anything princess).

I have the setting and characters. I'd like to have strong, Christian character play a part and am thinking of an adventure or a quest that Shaela and her siblings (and of course Raider)find themselves in.

I am seriously stretching myself here.
ah... it would be much easier to bake a batch of cookies:)

Terri's post is so inspirational. Yes, why should we give up? Then we'd all just kick our selves and wonder "what if?"

And even after you publish, it doesn't stop - there is always "the next thing" to do or overcome or write or be or say or......!

Keeping an open attitude, and never giving up are important . . .it can be easy to become discouraged with all the rejection.

Love the guest post, Terri!
