Brilliant sunshine pours down on the old church at Tumacacori Mission in southern Arizona.
This gem of the desert holds a lot of history. Now surrounded by silence, it was once a thriving mission, founded by a Jesuit, Father Eusebio Kino, and later settled by Franciscans.

The photos below are of the adjoining mission gardens. Unique desert flora and fauna provide a welcoming atmosphere for visitors. In the hottest weather, and in Arizona when it's hot, it's really stifling hot, a fountain is especially appealing.

When our family lived in Arizona, it was always a peaceful experience to visit Tumacacori Mission. One can almost hear the laughter of the Native American children who once walked its grounds and the pealing of the church bell from the tower.
The church, itself, is in great need of continued repair. It is not in pristine condition, like some old missions but it's still a great place to visit and learn about another time.

There is a museum on the grounds, too, where one can be immersed in the history of this special place.
HAVE YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT A MISSION? IF YES, WHICH ONE?
beautiful and rich in history...I love old buildings and imagining the stories they hold.
ReplyDeleteEven though we lived in Arizona for 12 years, we never made it to this beautiful mission. Our loss! Thank you for the pictures.
ReplyDeleteBoth hubby and I have visited every single mission in CA (so we're not complete losers - heh)
Gorgeous photos. I love to visit historic places. My husband and I just came back from Hot Springs, Arkansas. I found the old architecture and the town history so fascinating. A unique event happened to me there. That will be material for my next post :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy Valentine's Day!

Hi Susan, The sky is so blue! I have never heard of this Mission. Thank you for sharing. My favorite Mission in the world is Chimayo in New Mexico at Easter time. I shall blog about it sometime soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your beautiful wish!
*hugs*
I visited several around San Antonio, TX, while I was there for business. They are so powerfully peaceful... and beautiful...
ReplyDeleteGreat photos, Susan. A lovely place.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that has always amazed me is how different the architecture is - in different places. That looked like the structures you'd imagine out west - and not where you live - but all building types - the differences are amazing.
ReplyDeleteHope that made sense.
