Shadows in the Late Afternoon..
Late afternoon shadows fascinate.
As the sun shines its last "hurrah" of the day, filtering through windows and lace curtains, it bathes everything in deep, rich golden color.
Sometimes, when the sun is a big molten gold ball near the bottom of the sky, it zooms through the kitchen window like a spotlight. The intensity lasts for a very short time.
During those fleeting moments of golden glory, it's extremely pleasant to just stand at the window and delight in being illuminated.
One recent afternoon, I did just that. Glancing over at my Valentine rose and baby's breath in a fancy cut glass wine decanter, a scene worthy of an art gallery met my eyes.
The sun spotlighted the rose and intricate shadows formed on the side of the refrigerator. Talk about mesmerizing!
Also, on the kitchen door hang some wind chimes which come from a miniature birdhouse, less than three inches high. It, too, formed a lovely shadowy image on a nearby wall.
At the top of the window, the sun filtered through a lacy valence, adding to the visual treat.
Basking in the loveliness of the afternoon sun, I couldn't help but think of the happy little children's tune that goes, "Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun, please shine down on, please shine down on, please shine down on me!"
But before one could say "lickedy split," the sun had slipped down below the horizon and gone to bed for the night. Goodnight sun, goodbye shadows.
All good things must come to an end.
DO YOU EVER CONCENTRATE ON SHADOWS?

Funny the shadow of the rose is almost as pretty as the real rose. sandie
Oh we sing that song all the time in my preschool music classes...love it. I still have my rose from Valentine's day too and I love the California sunshine which shines each and every day all year round..Yes!
Beautiful photos! I love the rose and lace photos! They are stunning!

We do shadow play at preschool. One child stands behind the sheet (backlit by a lamp) and the others guess who it is. How they laugh and squeal.
Lovely post, Susan. I love all the shadows. My windows are tinted and so dirty from all the dust that it's hard for anything to shine through. Ha! Our 4-day weekend begins. woohoo! Best wishes, Tammy
It's interesting the pictures shadows and reflections create. I think they are often as nice as the original. Thanks for sharing these photos, Susan!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Karen
