There are hamburgers, hot dogs and steaks to grill, pools to splash in and friends and family to enjoy.
Many communities hold parades.
All fanfare aside, it's important to stop and think of why we celebrate today.
This holiday is tinged with sadness as we remember the fallen ones.
We remember the proud soldiers, both male and female, who went away to wars and never came home.
They had no welcome home parties. Instead, they came back in boxes or not at all.
Think of it. Think of what it must have been like for the mothers and fathers left behind.
Their sons and daughters, the little ones who played tag, ate popsickles and who were the apples of their parents' eyes, died while fighting for the freedom the rest of us still enjoy.
It's almost impossible to feel the kind of pain parents who lost their "children" felt.
Yet, it happened and today we must take a few moments to think of those who died.
The American flag is out on our front porch and many more wave in the breeze, hanging from porches all up and down the street.
Seeing the flags makes me feel proud. Thinking of the "why" behind this holiday makes me cry.
America is the "land of the free and the home of the brave."
Today we celebrate and silently salute those brave souls, American soldiers, who, in the name of freedom, are no more.
WHAT IS ONE WAY YOU WILL CELEBRATE MEMORIAL DAY?

I thank everyone who has served - man or woman or spouse - they give up a lot too. I am so thankful for this country and I do hope and pray we keep it as wonderful as it is now. sandie
Just watched the annual memorial day concert from Washington D.C. I have never watched one of these concerts without tears streamng down my face. God Bless all the heros...from the Revolution to Afhganistan...Thank you for your sacrifice!

Love you flag on your porch! I have always flown the flag from whatever porch I had. Since I am a mom whose son served in the Air Force for 12 years and so grateful he came home safely, my heart has always gone out to parents whose child paid the ultimate price for our freedom. We watch our Tampa Bay Rays play baseball. It is in the 90's here and full sun so inside watching the game in air conditioning is lovely. We won! Blessings.
It is a day of remembrance; sad, war.
