Three Decades Plus and Moving Forward!

Yesterday was my husband's and my 39th wedding anniversary!

Where oh where did the years go?

In some ways it does, indeed, feel like getting married happened a long time ago and in other ways, it seems like it was yesterday.

The years have passed in rapid fire succession.

Like most couples, we've had good years and others we don't even like to think ever happened.

Our many years of marriage have been sprinkled with tears, fortified with faith, and enjoyed with laughter, sharing and love.

We raised two wonderful "kids" who are now both married. They and their spouses are decent, kind and loving human beings. What gifts they all are in our lives!

In another post, I'll share how we celebrated the special day.

Thinking back on all the years of marriage, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for having shared more than half of my life with a truly good, kind and wonderful man.

He is my life's greatest gift, that's for sure.

It certainly hasn't always been perfect and we've been through a lot together, but I'm so blessed to have been married almost four decades of life!

WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, CONTRIBUTES TO A LONG AND STRONG MARRIAGE?

Well, for my hubby and me (44 years of marriage), it has been a shared faith in God that has kept us together, even through the difficult times. We have never even considered divorce as an option, and have seen many couples come and go their separate ways, with little concern for the ability to change their attitudes for the sake of keeping the family intact. There is such a feeling of "disposability" in today's society that it's a bit alarming, and I'm thankful that our son and daughter are in good, strong marriages that also are firmly planted in a mutual love for God. Congratulations on your 39 years, and I'll look forward to your next post! :-) <3

I think it's friendship and the ability to be able to talk to each other and you always need a sense of humour.

Happy Anniversary to you and your man!
Wish I had the "secret" to a lasting marriage. (I wonder if it's not different for every couple????) Ultimately - at least for me - it's come down to a WHOLE bunch of little decisions along the way. Decisions that at the time seem small but add up to keep the marriage in tact.... Hmmmmmmm. I need to think about that some more! :)

I echo the first comment completely. Bottom line UNSELFISHNESS......
Selfishness destroys marriages...
Happy Anniversary dear Susan...~Lucy.

Congratulations and Happy Anniversary! We'll celebrate 45 years in September and I owe it to my parents whom I watched for almost 50 years, cherish, respect, and admire each other. My dad's heart was broken when my mom passed away and you could see they had become one.
I know what the important things in life are and having someone you can count on (in good times and at the worse) is one of them, XOXO

Happy Anniversary! Congrats for so many years together. It's never easy but worth it I would imagine. My thoughts are that being best friends helps a marriage last!

Dear Susan,
Thirty nine years, that is so special! I hope you had a nice celebration. I've been married 32 years, and we have had good and bad times too, but have always stayed together through it all. I don't have all the answers to a successful marriage, but I do know that I love him with all my heart, and that counts for something, right? Happy Anniversary, Susan. I am so happy for you, dear.

Hello from Spain: happy wedding anniversary. In this post you write a real declaration of love for your husband. I'm also happily married. I have 13 years with my husband and it seems like yesterday when I got married. Time flies. The good thing is to always be together and face the problems and happy moments together. Happy Anniversary!. Keep in touch

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!! To 39 more. Everything you said is right on. We have good years and we have bad years - if you tie a knot and hang on - the bad will change to good - you have to have PATIENCE - I think that is something I have had to have in my almost 39 years. lol

Congratulations and Happy Anniversary. I think one of the most important things to a long successful marriage is kindness. It is more important to be kind than right.

Happy Anniversary! I hope you and your hubby have many more! We have the same anniversary I think! And being respectful of each other is the key to a long happy marriage in my opinion! Sweet hugs!

I agree with so many of the comments your friends left. I think I would add humor. Sometimes you just have to laugh it off and hug each other tightly. I know my Jimmy has changed those tears to laughs just being in his arms. He makes me feel safe and reminds me that everything is in God's big plan.
Happy Anniversary!
