Big cities have skyscrapers.
Bennington, Vermont, has the Revolutionary War Bennington Battle Monument.
It's the tallest structure in the state at 306 feet, four and a half inches tall!
Standing at the bottom of it, does kind of make a person feel like an ant.
One can see it from quite far away as it juts high above the trees and looks quite awesome.

The monument was built on the site of an arsenal depot, or the storage site of the military supplies.
The actual battle was over in two hours.
Brigadier General John Stark and his American forces defeated two detachments of British General John Burgoyne's invading army, according to a brochure procured in the Monument Gift Shop.
The impressive structure was made from blue-grey magnesian limestone from Hudson Falls, New York.
One can take an elevator up to the top, something I avoided due to a terrible fear of heights.
The view of the lush countryside must be gorgeous, though.
The monument is owned by the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation.
The grounds are lovely.

I LOVE historical places. This reminded me of the Washington monument in D.C. ...very tall. The countryside looked so GREEN and so pretty. I would have definitely taken that elevator ride to the top. Great Pictures!

ReplyDeleteYes very much, as we are a young country we don't have ancient buildings we consider things old over 100years, but in France a few years ago we were visiting places hundreds of year old, it seams amazing that they are still standing and they look like they will still be there for a few more years yet.

ReplyDeleteWhen we first moved to Massachusetts in the 90s, we did weekend trips to see everything (I was an American history minor)and loved seeing places I had only read about. So many beautiful areas and part of the heart of this country, XOXO

Yes, I too enjoy visiting historical places. I have been to the Bennington Monument; it was in the fall and my son and I did go to the top; the view of the Vermont countryside in Autumn from that high place was spectacular!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a delightful spring day for your visit. Enjoyed the photos; everything is so very green. After the whiteness of winter it is a feast for the eyes, isn't it? The change of seasons in New England is wonderful.
We live on the east coast and are fortunate to visit many historical sites. Our daughter lives in New England and we have taken trips to Bennington, Vt. The grandchildren enjoyed it very much. I also love visiting Bennington Potters there also as I collect their pottery.

ReplyDeleteVisiting historical places is something I truly enjoy. It is very sobering to pause and think about what happened in this place.
I hate elevators more than heights! This was so cool. I love learning new stuff each day.Our youngest son went to St Louis and he went up into the Arch! It was neat because he took a bunch of photos of the city and it was a beautiful clear day! He said he was a little nervous going up that high! I sure love visiting you Susan. Whenever I see a carousel I will always think of you. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to go to Vermont. The closest I ever got was when I went to New Hampshire when I was in the Army. I looks like a beautiful place.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh I went there last fall. It WAS higher than I thought!I guess I didnt expect something sitting where it is from that time period to be so high. I love heights so that is saying something.
