Perfect Peonies

Some visions from childhood never leave us.

My paternal grandmother grew peonies in her flower garden.

I remember burying my nose in the huge blossoms and sniffing the delightful fragrance.

(Also remembered are the ants that crawled up my nose once, when I inhaled deeply.

That was not pleasant and it made me do quite a dance around my grandmother's yard.)

Now, hubs and I have peonies.

They are white and deep magenta.

They are so beautiful to look at and smell.

I love pink, too, and if I ever have the opportunity to get some of those, it won't be passed by.

Peonies are exquisite flowers but they go by fast so they must be enjoyed every moment they are here!

DO PEONIES GROW WHERE YOU LIVE?

  1. Lovely flowers...my mother's only yard flowers was small patch of peonies because Dad wanted straight shots at mowing! They never did real well but some summers there were a few wonderful blooms to bring inside to the table. Nice memories.

Thanks for comments on my blog this weekend. The poem was for an anthology called Longest Hours about hard waiting times. I wrote the poem two years ago when we waited on a grandbaby to arrive after being told he had a brain tumor...but it faded thankful before nine months...but they were long months!

  3. There are peonies EVERYWHERE right now in GA. More of the wisteria color and they are gorgeous. Sue cut some out of her garden for our luncheon. The ones on the table started to droop while the other vase was doing fine. Linda finally saw that there were small candle burning under the ones on the table - guess they don't like heat - lol. sandie

  5. Yes, we do have peonies here in E TN, but as you have said, they live brief lives before returning to the ground, where they come up again the next spring, unless a careless mower mows them down! I remember that my grandmother called them "Piney Roses," instead of peonies, and it was several years before I realized it was the same lovely flower. Yours are quite beautiful, and I know they've added a brilliant touch of color to your lovely yard!

  7. I do have peonies growing in my yard; they are carnation pink, but they have really no fragrance....I remember these flowers from my childhood also and their fragrance was fabulous. Don't understand why mine have no smell. Maybe a question for "google".

Yours are gorgeous; love the deeper pink. Enjoy.

  8. Nice memories also from my home.

My Mom had an English garden and the peonies were growing and lily of the vallies. The Typical English blooms that gals grew in London England. She made her Canada garden do the same.

I love your flowers of pink.

    Thank you for sharing.

  9. My peonies have bloomed and gone, but it makes it easier to dig up the clump of the ones my grandmother gave me 45 years ago to move to the next house. Yours are just gorgeous and that's one of my favorite flowers--it's in my first collection of paper flower dies. XOXO

  11. Hi my friend, just haven't been keeping up with my blog friends like I so enjoy.
I have peonies but they don't do well in my backyard. I don't think they get enough sun. I should move them. They were a favorite flower of Tasha Tudor too.
    Love ya,
    Linda

  13. Yes, we have peonies here, though our season for them to bloom has long passed. We added another one this year, a bit darker than our pink, and I am eager to see the blooms from it next year.
