Sweet Memories

Today, Sunday, I wish you the gift of sweet memories.

Much of the time, we get lost in the tasks, the long  "to do"  lists of the day.

So  today, this fine Sunday in June, I hope you'll take a moment to remember something sweet from the past.

When I look at the African violet plant sitting on the kitchen windowsill, shown in this post, my paternal grandmother comes to mind.

She loved African violets and since they rarely died quickly, they must have loved her, too.

She had a tender touch.

I can still see her gentle blue eyes from behind glasses; her long, gray hair pulled back from her face and rolled into a bun at the back of her neck.

Someone said once that Grandma never cut her hair.

When she let it down at night and brushed  it, it fell past her waist.

It's been decades since she went to the other side and still, a part of my heart aches when I think of her.

Thankfully, I have mostly good memories of her.

WHAT IS ONE SWEET MEMORY FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD YOU COULD SHARE TODAY?

  1. Susan, I was sitting outside this evening thinking about when I was little and used to chase fireflies in my grandma's lawn.

  2. My father passed away when I was about ten years old. When I am working in my garden I think of him. It was something we did together. Now I like to get my granddaughters in there to learn to love getting their hands dirty in the garden.

  6. Your African Violets remind me of my dear Aunt Irene. She had the best green thumb ever. She had an entire greenhouse of African Violets. I miss her a lot. She had a miniature dollhouse - that when she died - it was so big and beautifully done - she left it to a museum in Indiana.

    Love, sandie

  7. My Cousin Sel plant is a memory and a relative of the African violet. She wasn't my cousin but my friend's. Together we have kept the Cousin Sel plant going for 30 years and I think of the woman when I see the red blooms even though I never met her.

  8. My maternal grandmother lived next door to us as I was growing up, in a building that had been a dirt-floored garage, with cinderblock walls and a tin roof. Dad put a floor and electricity in the building so she could move into it. I fondly remember napping on rainy days under that tin roof, on her bed with the featherbed mattress! There is nothing like a tin roof on a rainy day to put a person to sleep. :-)

  10. Susan,
Your post came at the perfect time, as I visited my mom and dad at the cemetary today. I had many sweet memories with them, I couldn't pick one.

Wishing you a day full of memories.

    Love,
    ~Sheri

  11. Each Sunday we would either be at my Mom's mom's house or my Dad's dad's house. I have very fond memories of both sets of grandparents and glad I got to share in that experience living close by both.

  12. What beautiful African violets. I don't think I've seen one more beautiful. How sweet to remember your grandmother in such special ways, her way with plants, and her long hair.

  16. It is not Sunday now.. and somehow I had a very nice one, but filled with present. We did lovely shopping with my husband and had a delicious dinner at Mexican restaurant :)

I wish I had opportunity to know my grandparents, but unfortunately almost all of them passed away before I was born.
