Every time I eat an avocado, it kills me to dump the pit.
"That could make a nice plant," I always hear myself say.
So this summer, every time we ate avocados, I saved the pits.
Lined some of them up in wine glasses on the kitchen sill.
You know the drill-----stick toothpicks in them and set them into a glass of water.
Then you wait. And wait. And wait some more.
I'd change the water periodically to make sure the pits were soaking in cleanliness.
Nothing happened. My son-in-law, after several weeks, told me to give up.
But I'm usually not a quitter until the last possible shard of hope runs out.
Hubs planted the pits. Then we waited.
We watered those pits, then waited some more.
Lo and behold, one recent day, I yipped like a puppy who had his tail stepped on.
One of the pits popped!
A single stalk is growing out of it and that means a future plant is on its way!
Ya hoo!
There are still several more pits waiting to pop. (Hopefully.)
Do I still want to save avocado pits?
Sure, why not?
HAVE YOU GROWN AVOCADO PLANTS FROM THE PITS?
This wouldn't be for me, Susan, as I found out the hard way I am extremely allergic to avocado! Hard to believe but true.
ReplyDeleteWell how about that! I do not have a green thumb. But I like avocado.
ReplyDeleteMine grow in the compost bin but they only go to a certain height and usually disappear, they like heat and take a long time to fruit, pity you weren't round the corner I have two growing in my back yard at the moment, I would give them to you as they always grow in the wrong spot and will be pulled out soon.
ReplyDeleteMerle...........
I eat avocados all the time and say the same thing. In fact, one pit had already popped when I opened up an avocado recently and I wanted to set it in water but never did. My mom actually grew one years ago -- it was at the time we were moving several hours away and I remember we placed it in the backseat of the car so nothing would happen to it. It had grown pretty big so it can happen. Keep planting and hoping and waiting! I'm gonna do the same. In fact, I'm gonna have avocado for lunch. :) Best wishes, Tammy
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic that you finally got one to grow, hope the other ones will grow as well. I rarely eat avocado to be honest. Enjoy your weekend
ReplyDeleteYou know, I have never even bought an avocado! I have eaten guacamole at several places, and my daughter even makes a great guac, but I have not ever tried to do anything myself with them. I hope you are successful with this little experiment!
ReplyDeleteGrowing up we always saved the pits and grew them. I tried last summer and gave up!! Might try it again but this time in a lovely wine glass like yours!! Great idea!! make it pretty!
ReplyDeleteHello from Spain: I like avocado but I do not crop. Keep in touch
ReplyDeleteWe have tons of avacados around here so I never have had to plant one. Someone told me I had an avacado tree in my backyard on the hill but it wouldn't grow fruit unless another one was planted near it..Good luck with your little sprout.
ReplyDeleteOh you and I are the same! I look at that pit and sadly toss it in the garbage. Not to many avocados growing in the desert. :)
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend.
You and I are not quitters are we? I don't think I would plant avocados though because don't they have to grow like in Florida? But I have to say that is so cool! I will watch through you. sandie
ReplyDeleteYay! How exciting! Yep, I have grown then back when I was a kid. I hope you get your plant. Kit
ReplyDeleteI've never had an avocado, but growing any kind of food item fascinates me. My garden was a disaster this year. Next year, it's flowers.
ReplyDeleteIt never hurts to try somehthing at least once. :)
