Neighborhood squirrels are anything BUT good neighbors.
They have made a smorgasbord of my carefully planted flower bulbs on numerous occasions.
Last fall, however, hubs put chicken wire on top of our front yard round flower bed.
The squirrels may have been able to stick their paws into the wire openings but they sure as heck were unable to bring the bulbs out!
This spring, at last, we have lovely muscari (purple hyacinths) and yellow tulips that survived and are prospering, all thanks to chicken wire.
(Now if I could only think of a way to put it all around the bird feeders so the bushy tailed ones cannot rob every grain from the "boidies.")
I do admire the squirrels' persistence and hard work ethic but just wish they would go to someone else's outdoor restaurant!
HAVE YOU FIGURED OUT A WAY TO DETER SQUIRRELS FROM CAUSING HAVOC IN YOUR YARD?

Susan, I just read somewhere that putting cayene pepper in bird seed does not hurt birds but drive squirrels away. There is also a commercial bird seed with it in it already, so I read!
I do not have any squirrels where I live so do not have that problem. Right now I have a bunny who loves to come around five p.m. to eat grass...He's or she is so cute I don't care if my grass gets eaten.
I love watching squirrels and their crazy antics. All little creatures of the wild are just trying to survive and we tempt them with the most amazing smorgasbord in our gardens. :) Have a great weekend. Tammy
What are those pretty blue flowers? We have a rabbit family who eats our hosta plants. Oh well.
Squirrels annoy me. Lovely flowers you have. Love the chicken wire idea.
The flowers are looking lovely. I don't have an issue with squirrels perhaps because I don't live at ground level. One squirrel used to visit every year but since I stopped growing corn, he stopped visiting.
So smart and now you have some pretty flowers!
Wait til they get in your attic - lol!
You can use Vaseline and they sell squirrel proof bird feeders by Yankee - I'll send it to you.
Happy Mother's Day my dear sweet lady.. with love Janice
Hello from Spain: I see squirrels destroy your garden. A pity. In my house I have no squirrels. We keep in touch
Oh, those mischievous squirrels in your front yard, Susan. So sorry they have messed up your flowers and all. I don't have squirrels yet around my neck of the woods because it's a new neighborhood. I do see them at the park sometimes just pop their heads out of the dirt hole, and they startle me. :~)
