The Berries Have It
It was a crazy busy weekend but good.
I was happy to take a trip to Trader Joe's, a specialty supermarket that has lots of great items.
While perusing the fruit section, there were some delicious raspberries.
Despite the $5.99 price, I bought them since raspberries come with lots of sweet memories.
My late father grew them in the backyard of the house in which we grew up.
He loved finding the berries for us kids and delighted in picking handfuls to give to us.
The fat little globes of lusciousness from Trader Joe's didn't disappoint, all these years later.
Now, if only I could give my Daddy a hug, that would make those berries all the sweeter.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BERRY?
Love your memories! I like so many fruits, mostly melons and berries. Raspberries and blueberries are low in carbs so I tend to snack on those more.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Week! :)

I love Trader Joe's. Raspberries are special indeed. Glad your memories of your dad made you smile whatever the price.
ReplyDeleteThe Fresh blueberries and raspberries usually come from California and are mostly available year round. Same with strawberries, but way too expensive, so we wait until we can buy strawberries that come seasonally from Egypt.
ReplyDeleteRaspberries have been my go-to food for my lunches ever since I lost 100 lbs over 2 years ago. They are only 1 calorie per berry and so good for you! :) I call them a super food. I eat a handful and only have 30-40 calories. Thankfully, we can find them here most of the year (not so much during the winter months or only at outlandish prices). Because we are on a budget, I won't pay more than $2.50 for a pint but I've been finding them at Aldi and Meijer for reasonable again now that January is here. They are my favorite berry. (I too used to grow them in our backyard, but tore out all of the plants some years back because I just couldn't deal with all the thorny shrubs anymore - need to find the thornless variety and then I might grow them again).
ReplyDeleteLinda in Illinois.
I'm really a strawberry girl. I also enjoy blackberries but the seeds can be a pain. Staying warm, how are you?
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful memories of your dad.
ReplyDeleteI'm a sucker for strawberries, but I also love just about any berries. The best blueberry muffins I ever ate came from Friendly's in Chicopee when I lived in Western Mass and worked at the Division of Employment there. Brings back some mouth-watering memories.
Any berries will be good now! I have the same memories about going to my grandparents and finding those in a small forest near by!
ReplyDeleteI love all berries, but raspberries are on of my favorites. We had them in my backyard when I was growing up too. Sweet memories. xo Laura
ReplyDeleteI just had raspberries this past week as I can get them all year round here in California even though they are expensive now. My grandkids were here and I like to offer them those berries with whipped crème on them . They love them and so do I. I think those are my favorite berry of all. Love blueberries too. Many memories of picking blueberries with Dad as well as his raspberry bushes are ingrained in my brain. Have a good week and stay warm.
ReplyDeleteI do like a good strawberry,

Oh, what special memories you have, Susan, of your father picking raspberries in the back yard of your house growing up. I can see why this berry is special to you. My favorite is the blackberries. And if they're BIG AND PLUMP, all the better. :) I got a lot of goodies at Trader Joe's this Christmas.

Susan, some of my favorite memories, listening to my dad talking about how he took an empty lard pail and went berry picking.
ReplyDeleteYour photos always pop. I wish I could say raspberries but I found out I am allergic to them and strawberries so I would have to choose blueberries. Hope you are staying warm up there!
