The Silence of Snow

A huge winter storm, called a nor'easter" in these parts, descended with a vengeance yesterday, in the pre-dawn hours.

By the time most people in western Massachusetts woke up, snow had already been falling for quite awhile and accumulations could be readily detected.

One aspect of big snowstorms to be cherished is the silence they invoke.

As millions of flakes swirl from the sky, everything is extremely quiet, except for the sounds of occasional snowplows.

It's like being enveloped in a silent, frosty, and colorless world.

Below is our bird bath, complete with a device inside it to keep the water warm.

The bird feeder, shown at the top of the post, now has quite a fancy roof!

The baby swing in the backyard evokes memories of summer days,  both past and also to come.

See that big mound behind the bushes?  That's my car that bravely collects snow because we don't have a garage.

Admittedly, snow days are dear to my heart, especially when I can stay blessedly home and get caught up on cleaning, office correspondence or anything else that needs doing.

(This is a little lantern on our front porch.)

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE A DAY ALL TO YOURSELF?

  2. Those were lovely pictures of snow which I enjoyed LOOKING at and I'm grateful I don't have it where I live. When I have a day to myself I read in my kindle or go to a good movie.

  3. Pretty snow. We had it too, but not as many inches - regardless, it made driving home from work trecherous on Wednesday afternoon/evening here. That's why I don't like snow, because it's all rural roads here without a lot of trees and it doesn't take much snow at all, without a wind block, for the roads to become really dangerousz fast. Thankfully, it was the only small storm we've had all winter and I hope it stays like that. Today it's warmer and tomorrow even warmer so the snow will all be melted again by the weekend. As for your question - I honestly can't remember the last time I had a day all to myself. Even if I'm at home, someone else is normally there.

  4. I don't think we are going to have snow this winter. The month long forecast is for rain, snow flurries at best. I used to wake up in the night listening...the snow silence was so "loud" to me.

  5. Will your car start after sitting out there like that? And I do know what you mean - The sounds of silence... I think it is that way because all that snow is breathe taking - and you just want to stare and stare at God's beauty! Love, sandie

  6. I love the silence of snow. We've had a lot of snow since November and I still stand outside in the late hours and soak up the silence.

  7. I was thinking of you when I heard the forecast of this recent snow knowing you would be getting hit hard. We received far less. I have enjoyed your photos!

  8. Mother Nature has a way of letting us know who is in charge! I find it hilarious that this administration doesn't think we have a problem with global warming and the loss of the ice ledges in Antartica! Stay warm and cozy, my friend, XOXO

  10. Susan, your snow pictures are wonderful! I especially like the one with the white chair all covered in snow. It's so special that you appreciate this white wonder like you do.

The sun is shining today, and everything looks pretty from all that rain!

I wanted to thank you for your comment, Susan. You are a gracious lady with a heart of gold. I hope many blessings come your way, my dear friend.

    love, ~Sheri

  11. Wow! So much snow! We are having a warmish time right now with rain on top of all our snow. When I have a day to myself, I love to watch movies and putter around my house. Decorating, baking, and just enjoying my favorite place on earth! :) Happy Valentine's Day! Kit
