Bedrooms in Old Houses in Salem

Imagine living through a brutally cold New England without benefit of central heating.

It surely must have been c-c-c-c-c-old with just the heat from a fireplace.

(This is one of the fireplaces in the House of the Seven Gables in Salem, Massachusetts.)

For that reason, many of the old beds one sees in ancient homes had heavy curtains around them.

I imagine the people in those days had heavy comforters, too, and an abundance of blankets.

The bed shown below, in the House of the Seven Gables, had its curtains removed due to problems with moths, a guide told us. They will be re-installed in the future.

The bedrooms shown  below happened to be in the house in which  Nathanial Hawthorne was born.

Some of the walls in his house had writing on them.

The tour guide also told us the house was not located on that spot. It was moved there from another location!

WOULD YOU HAVE LIKED TO LIVE IN VICTORIAN TIMES?

How old are the words on the wall?

It seems life was harder then, but in some ways happier.

I love seeing the Victorian era furniture and antiques, but would not want to live during that period.

Nope I like living in modern times. Nice photos of the House of Nathanial Hawthorne. I have been there but many years ago and didn't remember some of the things you posted.

I like reading about those times, but I would not want to live in those times. Too hard on women (so many died in childbirth, rights and freedoms, not to mention dresses with cinched-in waists).

Thanks for the glimpse of Nathanial Hawthorne's home. Visiting where famous people lived is always an interesting experience.

Wishing you a beautiful weekend. Brenda xox

Victorian times in England were very harsh for many people.

God bless.
