A wise old owl
Sat on an oak.
The more he saw,
The less he spoke.
The less he spoke,
The more he heard.
Why can't we be
Like that wise, old bird?
Sometimes we run across something that just makes us laugh.
Reading a few lines about a wise old owl definitely brought a smile to my face.
Some say it was written by Edward Hersey Richards (1874 - 1957) and quoted by John D. Rockefeller.
Others say "nope," it was published in 1875 (or even earlier. In 1975, Mr. Richards would have been one year old!)
Some others just say, "Author Unknown.
Whoever originally wrote it, thank you.
It's a delightful little piece with a very wise message.

Who who who who who said the owl. The owl was my grandson's elementary school mascot when they lived an hour and a half from me up north. They just loved drawing owls and wearing their t shirts with a picture of owls.
Listen more - speak less = more wise like an owl.
Susan, now I know we are kindred spirits.....I used this poem early on one time. I think it's wonderful. To be silent is sometimes the best thing. But then there are times when we see unfairness or wrong doing, and we must speak up.
Thank you for this delightful poem today. And on my birthday it's even more special.
