Winter's Benefits

Outside the kitchen window, tiny flakes of snow are dancing all around as they fall from the sky.

Trees are still lined with white snow "frosting" from this winter's previous snowfalls.

Only the frisky squirrels don't mind the bitter cold.

They glide quickly along the top of the neighbor's fence, looking for food with which  to stuff their little cheeks.

Children love the "snow days" called by school districts.

That means they don't have to go school, so they can suit up and go sliding.

The squeals of their laughter resound in the nearby woods as they fly down the hill on round contraptions and a toboggan.

Despite its drawbacks, winter in New England is quite invigorating.

TELL US ABOUT ONE OF YOUR HAPPIEST WINTER MEMORIES FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD.

Going to a ski place near my hometown and staying inside at the restaurant drinking hot chocolate instead of putting on skis and going down the slopes...ha ha ha.

We had very little snow in this area - where I lived when a child. Some memories I have are of my father having to work overtime, not being able to come home, as there were power lines down in town, and he worked for the power company using the “old-fashioned” methods of restoring power. Sometimes, a resident would give him something extra for the hours he would have worked near their property, especially if they might have something in their freezer.

Oh Susan, we're getting so much snow right now. It's beautiful outside. The kids looks like they are having a blast sliding down the hill in their toboggan. I notice that your trees are bare. Surprisingly, they are not bare here for as much snow as we're having. Maybe cause we're in the mountains? Trees surround my area.

Have a peaceful weekend, dear Susan.

I moved fromt he midwest where we had snowfalls to interior of Alaska where there was little snofall (but minus 50 degrees. We had a one inch snowfall and I made the tiniest snowman. Still have the framed photo as a happy memory.
