Many of them were young with hopes and dreams for futures they never lived to see.
They served their country, the United States of America, and fought hard to protect and retain democracy.
They are our veterans who died in service to their country.
Today is Veterans Day in the United States.
It's a very sad holiday but one that must be remembered for all the sacrifices made by brave men and women in the Armed Services.
It's always poignant to drive through a cemetery on this day and view the hundreds of American flags fluttering in the wind.
So many veterans went away to serve, were killed while in service, and never came back.
Others returned alive but were maimed for life.
These are sacrifices that helped retain our freedom and we must be filled with gratitude to those who served.
My own father was a member of the United States Army, Infantry Division.
He never liked to talk about his experience.
It was probably way too painful as he had a gentle, kind heart until death.
Like many others, several members of our family also served in most of the Armed Services---I had uncles in the Air Force, Army, and Navy.
Today, we may weep for their suffering and death but we still remember.
Today, we remember.
