Strawberry Season

Most berries are really tasty but strawberries are among the most delicious.

We are now coming into strawberry season.

One drawback of strawberries is they can have a short shelf life.

Within a couple of days, they can get mushy, moldy, and unappealing.

Recently, I came across a method of storing strawberries that was highly recommended.

Believe it or not, it worked!

Into a clean mason jar, place a folded paper towel on the bottom.

Wash and dry strawberries, add them to the jar, put the cover on it, and pop it into the refrigerator.

Strawberries I placed in it several days ago are still as firm and as delicious as they were the day they were purchased.

At a breakfast with a very dear cousin the other morning, I served, among several breakfast items, strawberry halves with creamed cheese to which maple syrup had been added. Delicious!

The berry halves were arranged on a dessert plate in the Old Country Roses pattern.

That set of dishes used to be kept in my late maternal grandmother's hutch and used only for special occasions.

These days they are used daily because life is short, right?

As we get older, we should use the fine china, drink out of the crystal glasses if they appeal to us, and eat those strawberries!

 Do you agree?

That's a great tip for storing strawberries, I will try that as they are notorious for going to mush in the veg tray. I don't use china or crystal for meals, our water pressure here is so bad I had to chuck the dishwasher. Unless it's soup or pasta I use paper plates...washing dishes is a drag.

It does feel great to sometimes pull out the fine china...We all need to feel like princesses sometimes. BTW...this one pictured is one of my favorite patterns. The strawberries and dip look so refreshing...Enjoy the weekend... The sun is shining beautifully around here.

I love that dessert plate in the Old Country Roses pattern. I recently saw a plate in this design at the Home Shop. I ended up getting something else, but I was glad to see they are still around. And you have a little sugar bowl too. The strawberries look really good with cream cheese. You're right, they don't last long, so we have to eat 'em up fast. Your table set is lovely, and your red table cloth is so charming with a burst of color.

I have to be very careful with strawberries as they do not agree with me too much. I love strawberry shortcake though. I never had them with cream cheese but it sounds good. I soak mine in white vinegar with a drop of baking soda and water in it for fifteen minutes,...then transfer them with paper towels between and put them in the refrig. Two weeks later they are still nice and plump..
