Spontaneous Dinner with Guests
Some of life's happiest moments are unplanned.
Spontaneous dinner parties are among them.
The other night, rummaging around in the freezer, I found a kielbasa. Now this spicy sausage is something that brings me back to childhood and my Polish grandparents.
Luckily, I had cabbage in the veggie drawer, left over from making stuffed cabbages.
Because potatoes had been on sale, I had two bagfuls of those.
So I popped the kielbasa into boiling water, chopped up the cabbage and put it into hot olive oil, and peeled the potatoes, quartered and boiled them.
Then, I washed and cut up three big fat green peppers and some onions and added them, too, to some hot oil in a frying pan.
Because the cabbage makes the house kind of smelly, I lit a cinnamon orange candle in the hallway.
Called my daughter and her husband.
Would they like to come for a spontaneous Polish dinner?
Oh yes, they would, indeed.
Quick, quick, quick, I set the table with yellow quilted place mats from the Christmas Tree Shops and plunked down blue cobalt plates.
Whoops! Dessert. Aha! I quickly cut up half each of a honeydew melon and a cantaloupe.
In the middle went blackberries and raspberries.
I mixed a couple tablespoons of confectioners sugar with the same amount of boiling water and added some bottled lemon juice. Stirred well and poured over melon.
By this time, the kitchen was a little hot so on went the fan.
Before I knew it, the guests arrived, happy and hungry.
The spontaneous dinner turned out to be a yummy success.
Joining Home and Garden Thursday on Kathy's blog, aptly named "A Delightsome Life."
Go on over and read about so many wonderful recipes from other blogs.
