Today news came from a friend that she lost three of her beloved pets this month.
First, her two "elderly" cats had to be put to sleep. The whole family went into mourning. Now, their dog, only eight years old, became very ill and also had to be put down. My friend is deeply sad. There is nothing I can do but share in her tears.
Our pets become members of the family. They are so much more than just cats and dogs. They become a part of the humans in the house. Their habits and routines become ingrained in our daily schedules. We listen for their footsteps, hear their meowing or barking, and feel happy when they are safe and secure in the house at bedtime.
There is no way thoughts of my own cat's eventual demise can come into my head without my getting very upset. She's 15 years old and we've had her since she was a small ball of caramel colored fur in the palms of our hands.
She's from the desert of Arizona where she survived a brutal snake bite; took a cross country airplane ride in a screened-in satchel (underneath my plane seat) to her new home in the east; has adjusted to life from oven to freezer temps in the winter; grew up with our own kids who are long since adults; most recently got into it with a skunk and it took weeks to return to her natural sweet smell; and she just keeps going, going, going like a certain battery! The photos of Honey Cat shown above were taken today. On a gorgeous New England afternoon, the last of July, she found the most comfy spot on the porch. This cat absolutely adores comfort.
Someday, no doubt, we will lose her. Perish that thought. Tonight, when she nuzzled up to me for a scratch under her chin, I was even more happy than usual to give it. She fills my heart to the very brim with love and asks for so little---a bite of tuna for breakfast and dinner. She's still alive and as feisty as a grandmother cat can be.
To my dear friend, my heart goes out to her. May her sweet pets rest in peace.
