Dreams Do Come True for Metamorphosis Monday at Between Naps on the Porch

More than two decades ago, when we moved to the southwest,  I yearned to have a fountain in our backyard.

The arrid weather of the desert certainly merited a fountain but there was never enough money to buy one.

Fast forward 21 years which finds us back in the east where four seasons meld one into the other in varying degrees of beauty. This year, as autumn began, it was enjoyable to look in our backyard and see a small brick patio that my husband recently built. (If interested, see the August 20, 2010,  post on it.)

"It would be so nice to have a fountain out on the little patio," I said to my husband. Shockingly, he  agreed that it would be a good addition. That reaction was enough to propel me into action.  Unfortunately, Wal-Mart did not have any fountains so I called next door to Home Depot.

"Well, we have a little girl with a bullfrog fountain,"  one garden department clerk said.  Uh,
no thanks, that's not exactly what I had in mind. Then he said they had a couple of tiered fountains. Bing!  So off to Home Depot I went.

One of the tiered fountains had black leaf designs on it and I liked the looks of it from the picture on the side of the huge box.  It had a sale price on it but was still not cheap. Still , using the bulk of my September birthday money, we bought the fountain and hauled  the box it came in, into the back of my husband's car.

A strange thing happened. The box began to leak water. Someone had, apparently, already tried to set up the fountain but must have given up and returned it. Had I known that, I would have asked for more money to be taken off the sale price.

To make a long story short, my marvelously talented husband put the fountain together in no time flat. There were a few tense moments during the installation of the pump. He elicited my help and I held the first two tiers of the fountain up while he fiddled with getting the hosing through the middle. I thought I was going to drop the doggone thing as it was very, very heavy and told him, in not  too quiet tones, to "HURRY UP."

When my husband finally put the extension cord plug into the socket, to turn the fountain on, the sound of the water falling was  music to our ears.

Twenty one years, since I first dreamed of having a fountain,  have gone by and there it now stands on the little brick patio. Along with the rustling of the overhead trees, do I hear old blue eyes singing, "Three coins in a fountain, through ripples how they shine?"

Water trickles down from the fountain as well as from my eyes. By gosh,  it's so awesome to know that some dreams do come true!
