Antique Brass Peacock Fireplace Screen For " My Romantic Home's 'Show and Tell' "

Looking through romantic decorating magazines and publications about antiques , one often comes across brass fireplace screens in the shapes of peacocks.

The plumage fans out and is always ornate. Whenever I spotted one of these screens photographed in a magazine,  it was fascinating to study  it in great detail.

One afternoon while browsing through a Goodwill store in the area of the country in which I live, a folded brass piece caught my attention.  Carefully unhooking it, a peacock tail fireplace screen in solid brass spread out!

The price tag read $19.95---a little steep for a thrift store purchase but not for an antique!

Folding and latching the screen once more, I carried it to the checkout counter and bought it on the spot.

When a fire crackles inside our fireplace in the wintertime, we use a full opening sized screen to contain any wayward sparks.

The rest of the year, however, the old antique peacock screen stands in all its glory in front of the fireplace.

It's like a romantic magazine page come to life!

Here's an overhead view, looking down on the screen:

What a nice find! It is a pretty piece for sure, and you can enjoy it more with the lucky price. My grandpa had a few peacocks on his place...pretty but oh, such screaming they did. :)

Very nice find! Most times antique screens I have seen are in poor condition. I too am always on the hunt for great antique finds.

Hi Susan, Don't you just love "unfolding" finds in antique or thrift stores? I bet so many people passed it by not thinking to unfold it. It is unique. I do not think I have ever seen one before...but then I live the dessert. It is beautiful. *hugs*

When I see beautiful screens like that it makes me wish for a fireplace. While I love our wood stove, I'm very tempted to buy the "fake" fireplace at Costco for our bedroom. Hard to justify $500.00 for a whim, though...
