Carousel Horses Are Part of Childhood Memories

(Photo taken in a hallway at the Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.)

Certain images from  childhood remain in our minds and hearts forever.  One of the clearest, and dearest,  memories I have is of excursions to a carousel, or merry-go-round, that stood on a hill overlooking a beautiful lake.  It had a peaked roof and families came from all over so their children could "ride" on  the horses which moved up and down.

Our parents occasionally took us there on summer nights so we could ride the carousel.  Every time we went was absolutely thrilling!

With this in mind, I wrote the following poem. I'm not a poet, by any means, but it was fun to write:

                                                                   Carousel Horses

Carousel horses go round and round
Up to the roof, then down to the ground.

They make childrens' hearts quiver with joy
Carousel horses for each girl and boy.

Childhood remnants of clear summer nights
Zoom in on the carousel, rimmed with white lights.

Laughter of children fills the night air
Mother and father wave right over there.

Carousel horses still go round and round
Up to a different roof, then down to the ground.
New generations of children now ride them with joy,
Carousel horses for each girl and boy.

DO YOU HAVE ANY CAROUSEL MEMORIES?

Susan,
What a lovely poem, that evoked a delightful childhood memory. I wrote about a carousel ride and it was published in Reminsce Magazine a couple years ago.

Hi Susan....I saw your comment on A La Carte Linda's blog and had to stop in...I love anyone who can leave witty comments because I couldn't come up with anything witty if someone put a gun to my head....I love carousels and always wanted a horse of my very own....then they became popular back in the 70's and the prices went crazy....So now I just like to take pictures of them....Have a great weekend...Sue @Rue-Mouffetard

Susan I love carousels and ride them whenever I can (even at age 60) So glad Sue stopped by she is such a great gal and funny even if she thinks she isn't! I'm not a fan of scary rides (roller coasters) so the Carousels was always my favorite and still is. Love your poem! Makes me smile.

I loved riding on the merry go round as I called it growing up and still do. Now I can enjoy it all over again with my grandsons. Yay!

Susan, that was a beautiful poem! I loved to ride them as a little girl, too! And I'm like Diane...we called them Merry-Go-Rounds, so that's usually how I refer to them still. And hey there, Linda @ Ala Carte, I LOVE it that you still ride them!! I'm going to begin doing that again, now, too....just 'cause of Susan's poem and Linda's horse ridin'!

Honestly not so much for me - but my GS loves them. I liked your poem and memories too.
