Elevators Are Not for the Faint-of-Heart

The old-fashioned elevator at the Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, Massachusetts

Elevators are scary.

They usually creep up the insides of buildings along dark, long shafts. If  an  old elevator got stuck between floors and the door opened, the people inside would see a brick wall. How creepy would that be?

Once, in a fancy hotel, three sides of the elevator were glass.  Up we went, climbing higher and higher while the people in the lobby below grew smaller and looked like ants.  It was enough to give me a major heart attack.

While having lunch at the Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, I saw a very unique elevator. It's the one shown here in today's post.  No amount of money would convince me to get on and ride it, however. It's see-through.  Riders see through the sides as well as the top!

The following photos were taken while looking up the elevator shaft. Standing with one foot inside and one outside the elevator, I leaned in and aimed the camera upward. There was no sense taking any chances by getting into it!

I would think riding in that elevator would be similar to being in a very fancy, artistic "cage."  The floor is carpeted.

If I were a guest in that grand old, historic inn, it's a safe bet to say  I'd take the stairs or call an ambulance.

ARE YOU AFRAID OF ELEVATORS?

The Berkshires are lovely aren't they. It's such a great place to spend the day. The elevators really look spooky!! Did they make much noise on your ride up and down?

I have NO fear at all on elevators. I'd much rather take one than CLIMB stairs which I absolutely HATE doing. The elevator where I work is down for two weeks for maintanance. Today I think I climbed the stairs from my room at least 16 times. I pray it will be fixed soon. My Mother HATED elevators ..was scared stiff of them.

Dear Follower from Beyond My Kitchen Window...I wanted to e-mail you but could find no e-mail address on your blog.

Yes, indeed, the Berkshires are very beautiful in all seasons. Quiet and serene. The elevator at the Inn kind of clangs like metal when closing but trust me, I did NOT ride it! No way, no siree.

Thanks for coming to visit and comment! Love having you.

Also, hello to Diane! Love, Susan

Haha, I'm not afraid of elevators per se, but I'm certainly afraid of heights!

What a gorgeous elevator. I've been stuck a couple of times, and it wasn't a pleasant experience. Whenever possible, I do take the stairs -- which includes health benefits. :) Have a great weekend. Tammy

Old elevators are interesting. The designs intrigue me, and you wonder what they were thinking. It seems they were concerned with more than function, doesn't it?

Hi Susan, I ride in one every day at work. Not a "rickety" one but an elevator full of surprises. Sometimes it stops on your floor, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the doors close fast, sometimes you are all standing there feeling stupid waiting for the doors to close. Overall, I think elevators are facinating mechanical inventions. Your pictures are fabulous. *hugs*

Your elevator is a beauty. Our courthouse on the square (100 year old plus) has a similar old evelator. They are classics for sure.

Thanks for commenting on my blog. As to markets, right now I am just picking them up from Writer magazines and friends who blog. I am falling behind in writing. I have done very little online writing, but had to do that car fiction for fun!

Hi Susan -

The only elevators that make my stomach lurch are the glass ones outside buildings.

Blessings,
Susan :)

Stockbrige, MA is on my list of places to go before I die. I even did a post.

I do not like elevators...especially if they go up a large number of floors. For some reason I think a few floors is survivable. :) However, while in NYC I did go up in the Empire State Building. My desire to see it overcame my fear. I never had a desire to go up in the World Trade Center, but my mother who had a fear of elevators did go up to Windows On The World for lunch one time. She said those elevators weren't scarey because they were large...about the size of a room and she hardly realized she was on an elevator.

This week in downtown Tampa I stayed in a gorgeous modern hotel on the 19th floor. All the elevators had glass walls open to both the lobby and the waterfront.

That elevator has a very smooth and quiet ride, and I can assure you it is very safe and you were silly for being too scared to step inside.
