Green Tea Dilemma: Health Versus Taste

Green tea is getting a lot of press these days as being filled with antioxidants and being really good for you.

Unfortunately, it is an acquired taste.  Actually, the first time I tasted it, a good word to describe it  would have been "yuk."

However, when I read that green tea might help speed metabolism as well as help prevent cancer cells from forming, I decided to give it another shot.

Here's a secret I've learned.  Since the taste of green tea, itself,  leaves a lot to be desired, brewing it with bags of fruity herbal tea makes a huge difference in taste.

Orange/tangerine is very delicious as well as raspberry or peach.

At this time of year, a cup of hot raspberry/green tea is perfect when accompanied by a crisp biscotti. The lemon are lush as are the toffee almond or even
plain. Biscotti are not highly caloric and make
a nice afternoon snack with tea.

Check out the tea section next time you go to the supermarket.  There are virtually dozens of delicious flavors to choose from.

So there's no need to forfeit the benefits of green tea. Mixed with fruity herbal teas, the result can be quite tasty. Keep containers  of it in the refrigerator at all times for sipping throughout the day or opt for hot tea when the weather turns cold.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TEA?

As a chemist, I can tell you that the many health claims attributed to green tea have not been proven. This is pretty much true for many herbs/supplements etc that the companies continue to flog. Wish they were all true, maybe some are, but few turn out to be. Still, tea in moderation won't harm you, so if you enjoy it, that's fine. Just don't expect miracles. Cheers!

Green tea is not my favorite, but your idea of mixing is a great one! I do love my rich blacks, though, and reach for them first if I have a choice.

My favorite is still my black tea and I agree that green tea is very much an acquired taste. White tea is supposed to have a good amount of antioxidants too, as does African Rooibos... which both taste much better than green.

I'm an Earl Grey fan and Constant Comment.

I had my friend in Japan send me some green tea from over there. Uh, yikes. Talk about an acquired taste...But I did get used to it and even enjoyed it.

I love all kinds of tea...haven't had coffee in years..I am not sure about the benefits of green tea but I do drink it. Mornings however I start my day with Lipton regular tea and evaporated milk and sweetner. Yummy!

I actually love green tea. From the first sip, I was hooked. In fact, when me and my friends started our workouts and lost weight 5-1/2 years ago, I gave up coffee for 6 weeks an only drank green tea and water. My favorite snack is green tea with some peanuts and dried figs. Or mint green tea with a piece of dark chocolate. I even found a chai green tea that had lots of lovely cinnamon and other spices. Yummo! Jasmine and lemon with ginger are also good - I get them from Marks & Spencers.

Most days my little spot of heaven is sitting comfortably on my couch visiting blogland and seeing beautiful areas like your's that are majestic in their Autumn attire.

Hope you are having a great Tuesday! :) Tammy

GREEN TEA ALL THE WAY...
I TAKE IT WITH A SMALL DOSE OF CREAM BELIEVE IT OR NOT..AND I LIKE IT THAT WAY....AND WHEN I HAVE IT IN A PRETTY CHINA TEA CUP...IT GOES DOWN PRETTY EASY...

ITS A WONDER WHAT I'D CONSUME FOR THE SAKE OF UPPING MY METABOLIC RATE! LOL

COFFEE IS STILL MY ADDICTIVE DRINK OF CHOICE...BUT I'M TRYING TO HAVE A CUP OF GREEN EACH NIGHT...AND IT REALLY DOES HELP!

I do not like green tea, no matter what brand or blend I buy! I am a tea drinker though and love Earl Grey and the many herbal teas. This time of year I look forward to a cup of tea when I come home... before I start dinner I set down and relax!

Good idea, Susan! I prefer a brisk black tea sweetened and with cream. Not much for herbal teas but I'm trying :)

Hi Susan -

Thanks for the tips on how to make green tea more palatable. I've tried it alone...once. Yuck.

Blessings,

HI Susan! I've had green tea by itself and didn't think it was too bad. I've also made iced tea using it. BUT, I much prefer the flavors!
