A Touch of Old-Fashioned Beauty

When it comes to decorating, old-fashioned romantic  and Victorian have great appeal.

Rose-covered anything  peaks my interest and our house definitely reflects my tastes.  My husband takes refuge from the roses and lacy "frou frou" in his own quarters, down in the man-cave. That's his domain and the decorating down there is strictly up to him.

Old-fashioned pitchers and wash basins have always intrigued me but I've never owned a set. Many times, while watching Little House on the Prairie re-runs, I saw "Pa" (Michael Landon) wash up in the very utilitarian wash basin, pouring water via the pitcher.

Can you imagine how chilly it must have been to wash-up without hot, running water in a Minnesota winter?  Yikes! I'd better think of that the next time the faucet gets turned on.

Anyway, a very dear friend of mine who knows my taste in decorating better than I do, bought me a small version of a rose-covered pitcher for my September birthday.  Rather than setting in a basin, it sets on an equally gorgeous rose-covered dish. It was love at first sight!

Whoever painted the roses did a great job. They look so very real. Every stroke is absolutely perfected.  This is a beautiful set and could not possibly have made me happier.

Old, long-time friends are precious to begin with. When they buy presents they know one is going to absolutely love, they are even more special!

Susan that is beautiful and romantic looking. I remember seeing movies with people using these - so glad we have a sink now, but it sure was lovely. I bet your house is gorgeous!

Oh Susan, what a beautiful gift!! I love it! I gave a bowl and pitcher to my mother many years ago for Christmas and it made me think about the pioneer days when people used them all the time....without the warm water that we take so much for granted! I loved Little House on the Prairie and watched the show many many times as a child and then again as my girls were growing up! :D

What a beautiful gift from your very good friend! You are right, whoever painted that did a gorgoeus job! Thanks for your sweet comment on Patience! I actually found her at The Christmas Tree Shop years ago. She was a brown resin planter and I sponged her with gray paint because I wanted her to look more like a concrete planter! haha She's getting used to her new hat. She's at least looking at me now. Of course I'm sitting right across from her so she doesn't really have a choice!!! ... Donna

I have many old antiques around the downtown condo, along with a good smattering of Early Goodwill decor! Those roses on the pitcher set are gorgeous!
