Wedding Brings Joy and Tears

Today my son is getting married.

While my heart is filled with happiness for him to have found the woman he wants to share the rest of his life with, there's also a tinge of bittersweet.  One has a child, nurtures him, guides, teaches, protects, and cares for him from birth.

Then, there is the landmine trek into teenage years. Is there anything more chilling than wondering if one's child is okay when he's late for curfew?  Or waiting for the car to pull into the driveway after he gets his license? The oh-my-Lord moments pile up pretty high during those tumultuous years.

Parenting doesn't end at age 20. No way. The college years come and go and then there is the first job after graduation, the traveling to new places, sharing disappointments, feeling the grown child's pain over  broken dreams, and on and on.

Then, inevitably, the time comes for a child to say goodbye to his parents and start a new life with his forever love. Of course it's a joyous time but it's also a letting go time.

So today, when my son becomes a husband, no matter how hard I will try not to cry, I know the tears will fill my eyes and threaten to ruin my eye makeup.  Can I help it if I'm a marshmallow heart?  When he walks me down the aisle, I'll look at all the friends and family present and cry some more.

When his bride comes down the aisle, and her eyes lock  with his in a glance of pure love, this mother is going to give Niagra Falls some competition.

(Happy wedding day, my precious son.)

P.S. I will share more on this momentous day in future posts.

HOW DID YOU HOLD UP DURING YOUR CHILD'S WEDDING?

Congrats to your son and your new DIL and best wishes to you. I think you are supposed to cry at weddings. Besides, your the mother of the groom. It's inevitable. Have a blessed day! :) Tammy

Susan it is a glorious happy day and moment when they marry but also bittersweet! They move on to their 'own' family. When my daughter got married I cried but such tears of joy that she had found her forever love. Now I'm going to be a Grandmother soon and more joy. It is a huge step and for your son, well now he will be a husband. It's ok to cry! Shows your love and happiness!
hugs to you!

I've come to the realization that when ever you write about your son I always cry. Maybe that's because of my own sons and daughter. Wishing everyone joy and happiness for many years to come.

Hi Susan
WOW this is my first time visiting your blog and what a day to do it!!
Wishing you all a truly wonderful day.
For your son and daughter-in-law, may they enjoy a marriage made in heaven!
For you Susan, this is another part of your journey and 'letting go' can be hard, but you are welcoming a new member to your family too, someone new to love and someone who will love and cherish you too!
EnJOY this happiest day!!!
Take care
Shane
PS when you find time, do come and visit me and I'll get out my prettiest teacups and make you very welcome! We can have a good old chinwag!

All of us that have been there first feel deeply for both your melancholy and your joy today, Susan. I hope it has been a good memory-maker for you over all.

Just a note to say I got my package today! Lovely and perfect day for it...slipped on wet McDonald's floor and wiped out body and broke my camera...I needed something cheerful when I arrived home! I will get back to more for you later...now, more Tylenol and hot bath await!

Those are both two longs stories, but I am sure glad you had a nice day there and that the two love bugs are happy. You have a great marshmillow heart.

Love,
sandie

When my daughter was married there were a succession of people passing out! Including her. The groom had to end the vows kneeling beside her on the grass. I almost passed out too, and had to put my head between my legs!! It was some kind of psychological thing going on!! Thankfully their marriage has been fine ;-).
