Tea Cups on Tuesday: A Touch of Elegance in White and Gold

New England, including Massachusetts,  is a great place to scout around for vintage tea cups. Little antique stores, estate and yard sales, and consignment and thrift stores almost always have some. One just never knows what beauties might be found.

For example, this gold and white Lefton cup and saucer have a very elegant and regal appearance.

The design on the cup looks like some kind of a gilded marking and it's repeated on the edges of the saucer. There are also gold tone shadings on the saucer edges.

The base of this lovely cup appears to have ridges with more touches of gold color.

Both cup and saucer have a luster ware finish that allows shimmering colors to shine through.

There's an interesting background to the Lefton company.  In 1939, George Zoltan Lefton, a Hungarian, immigrated to Chicago. The company was founded two years later, according to the Internet's  About .com website.  http://collectibles.about.com/od/companyprofiles/p/leftoncompany.htm

Lefton's background was in marketing and designing specialty clothing. However, his passion was collecting find porcelain.

According to About.com, Lefton went to Japan in 1945 to finalize an importing agreement. A year later, china stamped "Made in Occupied Japan" began to come into the United States.

Today, Writing Straight from the Heart is joining Tea Time Tuesday at Sandi's Rose Chinz Cottage and Tea Cup Tuesday at Martha's Favorites and Terri's Artful Affirmations.

NOTE:  The cup and saucer shown in today's post  are currently for sale and are coming up for auction. If interested, check them out out my eBay listings in the sidebar of this blog for specifics.

The teacup and saucer look like they are made from a highly polished mother of pearl. Very unique. Have a terrific Tuesday. Tammy

You are right, this is an elegant cup. Interesting that you live in an area abundant with cups. I assume you also find many older cups than here. I am guessing it has been settled longer and closer to easy shipping area, different from Midwest with covered wagons, etc.

I read you comments about the Round, "White Coral Bells". My daughter used to sing that when she was in Kindergarten. They loved that song. I was the "other kindergarten teacher". She was in the upper class, I had the younger students. I tried to teach mine, but they just couldn't handle rounds yet. Thank you for bringing back such sweet memories.
