Honoring Veterans

(Photo taken by Susan Wicker is of a body of water, at sunset,  in Western Massachusetts)

Today, Veterans Day, is a bittersweet holiday.

It's so filled with memories, many of them sad.

Of course, we honor all veterans on this day, those who are still living and those who have gone to the other side of life.

My late father was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was in the Infantry but he didn't really like to talk about it all that much.

I think he saw and participated in many war  horrors and never got over some of them.

That's what war does to a gentle, loving human being. It hammers the heart and makes lasting marks.

Today,  I feel immense gratitude to be able to live in this country and experience all the freedoms that veterans, including my Daddy,  so valiantly fought to preserve.

How can I ever pay them back for all their sacrifices?

Well, one way is to be the best possible citizen and to continue serving others whenever possible.

When I hear the National Anthem and see the American flag waving in the breeze, it always chokes me up and makes my eyes overflow with tears.

Our flag at home is up and flying from our front porch.

Today, we'll remember and give thanks to veterans with all our hearts.

p.s. Thanks, Daddy. Someday we will meet again and I'll give you a great big bear hug.

What a happy day that will be!

HOW DO YOU REMEMBER THOSE WHO HELPED PRESERVE FREEDOM?

Dearest friend, I too get choked up singing the National Anthem...remembering all those who came before us and served. My thoughts are with you today knowing what your dad must have gone through. However, I can just see him and my dad up in heaven exchanging "war stories" with all their buddies and it makes me smile. XOXO

There are many people I think of when I think of the veterans. I proudly wore a symbol today when I gave to the veteran's association on my way to the grocery store..I had a Dad, and many uncles that served and lost a very dear friend in Vietnam..yes today brings many memories.

On this particular day, I wore my red, white, and blue and assisted at my former school with their special program honoring veterans. A flag is on display here, too.

A sweet tribute from the heart Susan. My brother Melvin did two tours in Vietnam and retired from the Army. He earned a purple heart. My brother seen and heard to much and was never the same. So sad. I also had two half brothers who were in world war two. They never spoke of it. My heart is breaking for the young men and woman of today...who are in harms way day after day :( I fear for my grands.

Today, I had the privilege of attending a special program by our Christian school's elementary students. I donned my blue skirt, white blouse, and red blazer for the event, and proudly placed an American flag pin on my lapel. There were many veterans, as well as police and fire personnel, in attendance, and it was a wonderful program. Since our son is in the USAF, I think about our military people frequently and feel much gratitude for their willingness to serve. Thank you for this lovely tribute, Susan. :-)

That is such a sweet thought about your father - dad. I know you will see him again someday too.

We went to Andy's school yesterday where they had a celebration for the veterans.

Thanks to all the men and women who have served our country.
