Penny Candy Heaven

Going after penny candy at a tiny store named Johnny Gorman's was a highlight of my childhood.

It was thrilling to walk into the place and peer at all the sweet selections behind a glass counter.

My sisters and I would carefully select our choices which would be put into small, brown paper bags.

No doubt those excursions led to plenty of dental visits afterward but we didn't give that a single thought while munching our sweet treats.

Imagine how childhood memories were revived when I walked into the Manchester (Vermont) Country Store and found a huge selection of penny candy, just like when I was a kid.

Do you know the store even carried Skybars?  Those were among my faves as a child, especially the gooey caramel section.

The creamy chocolate wasn't too shabby either.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE CHILDHOOD CANDY?

Hello from Spain: I love jelly beans and candy. I love since childhood. I agree with you my regular visits to the dentist. Today I keep eating candy. My favorites are still jelly beans with sugar and red liquorices. I love these shops full of goodies., We keep in touch

My favorite was a chocolate bar similar to Mr. Good Bar. It was called a Lunch Bar, the peanuts were ground instead of whole. While Mr. Good Bar cost 5 cents, the Lunch Bar cost 3 and then I could also get Mary Janes, toffee with a dab a peanut butter inside.

Loved filling my penny candy bag, too.

I, too, remember frequent visits to Johnny Gorman's for penny candy. We just never seemed to have enough pennies tho.

I loved the Skybar also since you could break it into 4 individual pieces and savor each one. I also loved Squirrel Nuts and red licorice; those were really great for the teeth! ha ha

My favorite candy memories are going to Sears and the candy counter. Mom would get peanut clusters (I think) can't remember what my brother got, but I always got orange slices. Funny how that memory can bring such happiness.
hugs,
Linda

What fun memories. My Grandmother used to take us to the candy counter when we were little too! I love Zero Bars and Caramels back then.
Blessings, Valerie

Oh Susan, we are so much alike. I love penny candy, and even did a post about it awhile back. Wasn't it great to be able to go in the local store with a few cents and buy our favorite candies? I don't think I had a favorite, they all looked good to me haha.

love,
~Sheri

The best part of walking to Johnny Gorman's was the thought of getting that penny candy. I loved anything at all there. I had no favorites. Today my favorite candy treat is dark chocolate mints ..any kind!
