Graveyard at Old First Church in Bennington, Vermont, Fascinates

Graveyards or cemeteries are fascinating places to be.

From aging tombstones, one learns a lot about the people who once were and are no more.

The graveyard near Old First Church in Bennington, Vermont, where the bones of New England Poet Robert Frost lay, is peaceful and historical.

Other famous people are buried there, too.

On an autumn day, with fallen leaves crackling beneath our feet, we perused the hilly graveyard, straining to read epitaphs.

From the stone, below, we learned that the late William Ellery Channing died at sunset on Oct. 2 in 1842.

Some are no longer legible but many still are.

It's a picturesque and peaceful place.

One can look over and see the hills as well as sun streaming through fluffy clouds.

A visit here makes for  a totally awesome day trip.

WHERE IS THE MOST INTERESTING CEMETERY YOU HAVE EVER VISITED?

I must say the cemeteries on Maui were quite unique when I visited there and also the one in Zermont Switzerland which contained the bones of people who died trying to climb the Matterhorn. Many of them in Poland had pictures of the person who died on the gravestone.

There is an old cemetery in town with photos of the deceased. Tombstone etchings were the precursors to bumper stickers and Facebook :)

Hello from Spain: interesting pictures of the cemetery. I like the old cemetery headstones. In my country it is customary to go to the cemetery on November 1. Celebrating the Day of the Dead. Keep in touch

A few years ago, in the late fall, my family and I visited Concord, Ma and took a tour of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. It was a mild October day and very breezy. The leaves were fluttering down and swirling around us as we walked up a steep hill known as Poets Ridge. Here we saw the gravestones of Lousia May Alcott, Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Daniel Chester French( sculptor of the Lincoln Memorial in DC). It was quite a somber feeling to think of all those well known authors laid to rest there, on Poet's Ridge.

Your photos were beautiful, evoking peacefulness and quiet. May they all rest in peace.

We have a wonderful tradition here at Halloween where we have a story walk thru our main cemetary. Characters dress as famous figures in our town and stand near their grave and tell the story of their life. It is amazing! Kit

I have been to some really old cemeteries and I quite agree at the knowledge you can gain from it. All the people don't you wonder their story?
