"The Lion's Whiskers," an Ethiopean Folk Tale Come-to-Life

Puppet shows are great fun for kids of all ages.

This summer, in western Massachusetts, a production of "The Lion's Whiskers" by the Catskill  Puppet Theater, turned out to be a highlight.

Adapted from an Ethiopian folk tale, the show engaged its audience of primarily youngsters.

The puppets were bigger than usual and very creative.

The show took place in the jungle of Africa so there were large and unique animal puppets, like a camel and giraffes, to delight the audience.

John Potocnik and his wife, Carol Mandigo, are co-founders of the theater which has been doing shows for the past 38 years.

In "The Lion's Whiskers,"  a lonely lady named "Minya," marries a widowed man who has a young son.

Unfortunately, the boy is influenced to dislike his father's new wife but, by show's end, comes to love her.

The theater company prides itself on offering art, music, drama and American folk culture in its unique and varied shows.

Mr. Potocnik held up a puppet after the show and explained how it worked.

What a wonderful experience it turned out to be for all!

CAN YOU RECALL A PUPPET SHOW THAT YOU REALLY LOVED?

Love the story. I hope Minya had a happily ever after.

Have you ever heard of Mr. Dress Up. I think he was Canada's Mr. Rogers. I watched him faithfully when I was five. He had a puppet boy and a puppet dog named Finnegan living in a tree in his yard. That wasn't even weird at the time. ;)

Saw a wonderful marionette show when I was in Italy a few years ago. They also

let us go backstage and see how it was done and how the costumes were made etc.

A wonderful experience.
