Avocado Surprise

Every time I eat an avocado, it kills me to dump the pit.

"That could make a nice plant," I always hear myself say.

So this summer, every time we ate avocados, I saved the pits.

Lined some of them up in wine glasses on the kitchen sill.

You know the drill-----stick toothpicks in them and set them into a glass of water.

Then you wait. And wait. And wait some more.

I'd change the water periodically to make sure the pits were soaking in cleanliness.

Nothing happened.  My son-in-law, after several weeks, told me to give up.

But I'm usually not a quitter until the last possible shard of hope runs out.

Hubs planted the pits.   Then we waited.

We  watered those pits, then waited some more.

Lo and behold, one recent day, I yipped like a puppy who had his tail stepped on.

One of the pits popped!

A single stalk is growing out of it and that means a future plant is on its way!

Ya hoo!

There are still several more pits waiting to pop. (Hopefully.)

Do I still want to save avocado pits?

Sure, why not?

HAVE YOU GROWN AVOCADO PLANTS FROM THE PITS?
