Today on this blog are photos of a supermarket splurge: hyacinths.
With the fiercest winter on record slowly receding into past history, (please?), every fiber of my being is yearning for spring. There are no crocuses sticking their heads up from the earth because it's still covered with several feet of snow.
No buds on the trees since it's still freezing outside!
There are no farmers markets to go to and no fresh peaches.
However, all is not lost. In the supermarket, they had hyacinths, 3 for $10. It was a huge splurge for me but I did it anyway----put those babies right into the shopping cart before any food ever hit the bottom.
It was worth it, too. These flowers make me happy just looking at them.
They sit bravely on the chilly kitchen windowsill, looking out toward the snowy backyard and occasional sun. They are three beauties in white, pink (my fave), and purple.
According to the Internet's "The Flower Expert," hyacinths are very ancient flowers, having been cultivated for centuries. In Victorian flower language, they symbolized sport or play and blue hyacinths, sincerity.
They grew in Europe at the time of the Greeks and Romans and Homer and Virgil remarked on their sweet fragrance.
So, to celebrate the eventual coming of spring, as well as this blog's 500th post TODAY, woo hoo, I'm sharing photos of these beauties. Hope you enjoy looking at them!
