Yard Sale Treasure: Pedestal Dish

Besides nice weather, flowers, and sandals, spring brings yard sales!

It's next to impossible to keep from attending a few every Saturday.

When the daily newspaper arrives (yes, we still subscribe and enjoy it), I cannot wait for the classifieds to look for that day's sales.

On yard sale days, my adrenalin goes berserk. One Saturday a couple years ago, I must have hit five or six good sales. Both money in my wallet and gas in the car were running out so I decided to call it quits.

Uh oh. There was yet another tempting "Yard Sale" sign intensely beckoning me.

"Okay," I told myself. "This is IT. This is the last sale of the day. From this one, home we go."

The male seller greeted me warmly, maybe because I was the only customer at the moment. There, on a table, a truly regal and ostentatious glass set made my heart beat faster. The bowl was permanently perched on a pedestal and was flanked by two huge, cut glass candle holders.  The threesome was fit for a mansion.

"How much is that set?" I asked in a very soft voice, not daring to hear the answer.

"Oh," said the seller. "That was my mother-in-law's.  You can have all of them  for 15 bucks."

The set gleamed and shimmered in the afternoon sun. I took the last two bills out of my wallet, a $10 and a $5 and handed them over.

The pedestal bowl I use for fruit cup.  One recent Saturday night, I mixed together cantaloupe and pineapple chunks, sweet clementines from Morocco, and strawberries. I poured some not-from-concentrate orange juice on the fruit mixture and kept it overnight in the refrigerator.

In the morning, I added kiwi slices and put it in the coveted dish. The fruit  made an elaborate and stunning presentation and tasted so sweet and delicious. Also served were "huevos rancheros," home fries, crisp bacon, buttered warm rolls, and coffee.  The meal and presentation brought lots of comments from the guests.

Yard sale season is just staring once again. The old ticker is already anticipating what treasures will be found this summer!
